  1. I'm fairly sure your defense gave up 17.

Well, 28 of the 31 points were a direct result of our offense/special teams turning the ball over. When a guy stupidly tries to field a punt inside the 10 on a windy night and your offense takes the ball at the 4, that's hardly the D's fault. So that's 21 of the 31 points UNT scored. The other TD drive was off a short field as well, when the offense turned the ball to you, I believe at the 34. Again, to me, when the offense gives up the ball on that side of the 50, I tend not to blame the D for not being able to stop the scoring drive, but if you want to credit your offense for that one, fine, our D gave up 10 points and still lost by 2 TDs. Still, congrats on the win. Your team took advantage of our mistakes, which is what you are supposed to do. Also, the stadium looked real nice on TV. Hopefully, I'll get to the next game we play there in a few years.

  2. So I am working on a project in Fort Lauderdale and decided to scoot up to see what FAU was like. It was a Friday so students were everywhere, but I also wanted to see where their new stadium was going to be. It is literally across the street from their business school on the loop drive of the campus. It is as close to on campus as SMU's is. Our mecca is much further along. I assume they don't open theirs this year otherwise they are going to have to crank. But I was impressed with how this school which people could barely give me directions to is on the rise. While looking for their bookstore I noticed a tailgate emerging outside their baseball stadium. By the time I left their tailgate with DJ in the parking lot, frat brothers sitting on top of a bus...was in full swing. I thought for a baseball game, pretty cool.

School spirit looks way behind what RV and the fans have had a chance to build over the past decade. I don't see a ton of FAU gear like you see Mean Green gear in Denton. So we have them beat there, but I think I want to travel and see a game out here in their new digs in 2012. More importantly we must stay ahead of them in the arms race. I saw their big traveling truck with the big 2007 New Orleans Bowl Champions logo on it. I teared up:( Sorry I digressed. We must stay ahead of them or they will be a beautiful fit for CUSA expansion. For all the flack FIU and FAU have taken from the national media and fans in the past, both of those Miami/FLL area teams have been bowling and won bowl games in the past few years.

The drought must end. Mean Green football must rise up beginning this fall.

    GMG

P.S. - their bookstore bit. Talk about a lack of gear and accessories. Now the University of Miami was another story. Next stop FIU.

Thanks for stopping by our campus. I also like to go around and look at college campuses when I travel. It's a good way to kill some time.

Anyway, our stadium will be ready by mid October. We open with 4 straight road games. Our campus is currently undergoing a transformation of sorts. New dorms are going up and the football stadium is the centerpiece of the project. The goal is to transform us from a commuter school to a traditional college campus a la UCF a few years back. The results have been pretty good so far. When I was in school in the early 2000's, we'd get a few hundred people at a basketball game on a good night. Now we are consistently getting 1500-2500 every game. Students actually care about the programs now(which is a pleasant change!). It should only get better once the stadium opens. Please come back for a game sometime!

  3. Thanks so much for passing this along, fauouwls44! Hopefully they'll do a better job than our Mean Green Premium service usually does...that we have to pay for. You never know what you are going to get, quality wise.

Thanks again!! Hopefully we're in for a good game today.

I hope it isn't a good game...I need a blowout win! My heart can't take anymore games that come down to the last second like our ULM win and MTSU loss.

But I hope the stream works so everyone can watch the game. Apparently OwlTV has put a lot of work into getting this site up, and they'll be broadcasting any football home game not being televised and all the home basketball games. The picture quality of the exhibition bball game the other night was actually quite good.

Anyway, good luck...just not too much luck today!

  4. How is he not an idiot? I am not saying this because its FAU...I dont care of Bob Stoops said that about another team...the fact that any comments like that is idiotic and like I said, its worse when he backtracks. I'm hoping for total Longhorn domination on that idiot.

If he's an idiot, he's an idiot who learned from Bear Bryant and Don Shula, has won a National Championship, a super bowl ring(1972 Dophins), and that has turned 2 dying programs into College football powerhouses(UM and Louisville), and started one from scratch that has won a bowl game faster then any other. He also doesn't say things like he did without a reason. He'll have his team ready to give UT all they can handle.

  5. Could it be an announcement of a secondary tie-in. As in, if so-and-so conference doesn't qualify a team then the SBC gets the slot. That is my guess.

That is what is being "reported" on the FAU board. This would be a step forward, but I'd still prefer another automatic bid.

Just came across to interesting information in the form of talking points.

    SUN BELT CONFERENCE

    FOOTBALL MEDIA DAY

    Coaches Talking Points

    2008

There is much to be proud of in the Sun Belt Conference relative to football. There is also much going on behind the scenes to make the future even brighter, we want you to have all these facts in front of you as you prepare for the 2008 Conference Media Days

    1. POST SEASON BOWLS. On Tuesday morning we will announce a relationship with the Papa Johns Bowl (Birmingham), St. Petersburg Bowl (St. Petersburg, FL) and the PetroSun Independence Bowl (Shreveport, LA). These agreements call for Sun Belt conference teams with winning records to serve as alternates should the bowls primary contractual partner not have sufficient numbers of teams. SBC teams will be eligible for 5 bowls.

    THOUGHTS:

    a. There are now 34 bowls and 70 is the average number of teams that are bowl eligible.

    b. SEC 9 vs. Big East 5 (Papa Johns) – the SEC has never had 9 teams available in years in which they have had 2 in the BCS. The chances of us replacing the SEC and playing Big East 5 are excellent.

    c. Big East 6 vs. CUSA 7 (St. Petersburg) both Big East 6 and CUSA 7 are suspect. The Big East averages 6 teams as bowl eligible and would not have a team should they have two in the BCS. CUSA was two teams short of fulfilling on the last week of the season last year.

    d. Big XII 7 vs. SEC 8 (PetroSun Bowl) this bowl has had only one year (2005) when it was short a team – but the Big XII and SEC have added bowls and we believe this is an opportunity to create a relationship for future negotiations. They have 2 years remaining on their current agreements.

    e. WHY THIS TYPE OF RELATIONSHIP vs. TRADITIONAL BOWL TIE UP

    1. As America’s newest FBS Conference we have yet to establish large followings of fans (4000 is the highest number of tickets sales to date) this is our best opportunity to insure our schools will stay regional and build up a following.

    2. Creating bowls is expensive. To establish a traditional bowl we are looking at a 1.5M annual investment as opposed to no risk in these games and a guaranteed net pay out.

    3. If we had gone the traditional route only three leagues have teams available for games, this gives us an opportunity to play higher profile opponents and improve our own power rankings with a victory.

    4. Creating a bowl in our geographical area would require being the second game in an existing city. Moving out of our area would create a travel hardship for fans. We are still in the attendance business.

    5. These are all bowls managed by experienced professionals that will insure the best bowl experience for our student/athletes.

    2. STRENGTH OF THE SUN BELT. 2007 saw the second time in 4 years that the SBC has passed the Mid American in various power rankings. This is important as BCS dollars are partially distributed based on the strength of the league relative to other non-automatic qualifying conference. The SBC received an additional 500K because of this success. There are 119 teams in FBS. The average of teams in the five “non-automatic qualifying” conferences for 2007 was Mountain West 60.6,; WAC 79.5; CUSA 87.3; SBC 89.77; MAC 93.1. As you can see, we are ahead of the MAC and have closed the gap with CUSA. 2.4 represent about one game.

    3. BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (BCS) MEMBERSHIP. As a member of the BCS our conference receives the same rights and opportunities as any other league. We can play our way into becoming an automatic qualifying conference. We have a vote on all issues. We have enhanced access to the five BCS bowl games. An opportunity that the WAC has enjoyed the past two years. If Boise and Hawaii can play in a BCS game then so can we.

    4. SUN BELT CONFERENCE VERSUS REGIONAL RIVAL. In the past 2 years SBC and CUSA have played 15 times, the Sun Belt holds an 8-7 advantage. The Sun Belt has dominated the past two R-L Carriers New Orleans Bowls.

    5. 2007 HIGH PROFILE WINS. Proof positive that the league can compete at the highest level. Troy defeats Oklahoma State, Florida Atlantic defeats Minnesota and ULM defeats Alabama.

    6. SCHEDULES ARE CHANGING. We are seeing changes in non-conference schedules as more teams are able to attract high profile teams to their campus as part of home and home series. Even as guarantees are going up (1M has become a minimum) the number of teams willing to come to our facilities has increased. This is important as it adds to credibility, enhances crowds and creates national attention.

    7. FACILITIES IMPROVING. WKU is improving their facility; FIU stadium will open in September, FAU and UNT have been authorized to begin the stadium process. ASU, ULL, ULM have installed new turf and ULL has opened an indoor training facility.

    8. BETTER PLAYERS. Two first round draft choices in the past 4 years. Demarcus Ware 2005 draft 11th pick to Dallas and Leodis McKelvin 11th pick in 2008 draft to Buffalo.

    9. ATTENDANCE. From humble beginnings of per game averaging less than 10,000 as a conference in 2001 to over 20, 000 in 2007 significant gains have been made at the turnstile.

    10. TELEVISION. From no TV in 2001 to 5 national broadcast and 8 regional games in 2007, to 4 national games and 10 regional games in 2008.

    11. COACHES. Sun Belt Conference coaches represent a cross section of the coaching community; all have either competed as players or coaches at the national championship level.

    12. OFFICIATING. Conference officials have continued to distinguish themselves by being selected to work post season bowl games that do not involve Sun Belt teams. 2007 Liberty Bowl. Conference continues to upgrade the XOs Instant Replay System (also used by Big XII, Pac 10, WAC, MWC, MAC) next significant upgrade is in 2010 as we will switch to digital cameras.

    13. ACADEMICS. 12 of 13 Sun Belt Schools graduate student/athletes at rates higher than the student body. 180 Football student-athletes were recognized for having a 3.00 average of higher during 2007-08.

    14. COMMUNITY SERVICE. The Sun Belt Conference football staffs that participated in the clinics to assist the New Orleans Recreation Department July 2007 were nationally recognized by NCAA Football, Inc, AFCA, NCAA and National Football Foundation.

    15. FUTURE. WKU will join the league in 2009, which will result in 4 home and 4 away games. South Alabama will join the league in 2013 and we will remain at 8 conference games rotating teams each year.

  6. Keep hearing 09 for sure with a maybe third bowl when contracts start expiring.

I hope that this is true. I only see the Belt getting stronger and stronger, so we definately need at least one more tie-in. We can't have more 7 or 8 win teams sitting at home when 6-6 teams are playing in the postseason. According to the MTSU board the even name which bowl the 2nd tie-in will be, but of course that is posted in their "premium" area. If anyone knows, please post that info.

  7. You guys are right about the officiating. What a horrendous display by the Sun Belt crew. They missed some fairly obvious calls on both sides. There was a pass in the endzone where the FAU receiver's arm was help, and nothing was called. Also, that 4th and 1 play did appear to be short on the replay. In fact, the QB sneak the play before appeared to be plenty of yards for the 1st down and the spot was bad.

And the replay...how is there no time limit on that?? They must have spent a total of 10 minutes looking at replays. There has to be a better system.

  8. 2010 is a laughable timeline - like that's possible.

    Ha, I say, Ha!

FAU will use the same company that just built UCF's stadium. It took them 18 months to complete. They say FAU's stadium will follow the same timeline. It's steel construction, so it is faster and cheaper to build. By comparison, a regular stadium would normally take around 3 years, give or take a few months.

  9. Here you go my friend.

    Average attendance from 2006

    North Texas-15650

    FAU-9182

North Texas has also had crowds of 23,000+ for close OOC games(SMU, Tulsa, Baylor) and we won two of those. You need to do something to get more people out there.

What I meant was that we both struggle with drawing fans to our games, not that we get the same numbers as you do. Obviously, you have a higher per game average. You also play on campus, which is mostly my point in why we struggle so much with attendance. But, I read on here is how you guys wish the crowds were bigger, or that more students would come to the games, etc. Just saying we are in the same situation in that we wish more people came to our home games.

Also, just curious on how many opposing team fans traveled for those games against SMU, Tulsa, and Baylor? We had about 400 Minnesota fans there on Saturday.

  10. 20 miles, big deal. Playing a Big 10 team should draw more than a scrimmage crowd. If we want a real 1-A football league fans should act like it too...and show up for games like that.

Well the game was played at Dolphin Stadium, which is 40 miles away from campus.

I agree that it shouldn't matter, and you agree that it shouldn't matter, but you guys are in the same situation we are with attendance...how much would those 40 miles hurt your crowd sizw? Those of us who post on these message boards are the program's core fans...we'll go anyplace to watch our teams play...But what about the average fan? What about most of your student body? Would they travel 40 miles from campus to the game? Think to yourself how playing 40 miles from your campus, even against a team like Minnesota, who despite being a Big 10 member, doesn't have much of a national following, would effect your attendance?

I'm not saying it is excusable for students and fans to not show up, but this is the reality of our (and most SB teams) current situation. Playing off campus is an attendance killer. We've only been around a short time, and while our attendance is getting better, it is not where it needs to be yet...and likely won't be until we get on campus.

  11. Good points.

And, by the way, there is something to the geographic shift in the economy. UCF almost beat Texas, USF is doing well again. FIU hung tooth and nail with Miami. There's a ton of talent in Florida, just like with Texas and Cali. I'd bet by the time you guys get an on campus stadium, Schnellenberger is going to regularly beating BCS schools. There's too much talent in that area for it to be any other way.

Keeping kids in the area is the plan. In the past, the players a notch below the caliber of athletes recruited by the big 3 of UM, UF, and FSU would have to leave the state to play college ball. Now a lot of those players now going to UCF, USF, FAU, and FIU. It is no coincidence that you are seeing the growth in these teams. It is also the reason that UCF, FAU, and FIU have built or are building new stadiums on campus. They all need these facilities to compete for recruits.

  12. FAU's attendance has always been an issue, but you have to keep in mind that they play either in Dolphin Stadium like we did on Saturday, which is 2 counties away and 40 miles from campus, or Lockhart(the aformentioned high school field), which is 20 miles away from campus in Broward county. Try playing Mean Green games at least 20 miles from Denton and see how many people(especially students) turn out. This isn't an excuse, our attendance has to get better, but the distance is a problem. Tomorrow FAU's Board is voting on the approval of a stadium in Boca that will open in 2010. When that place opens, our attendance will at least be in line with the rest of the Belt.

  13. 1.  I like FAU's quarterback a lot.  He doesn't have enough weapons to help him out, though.

    2.  I don't know why FAU was written off as an 0-11 team.  They play decent defense and should be able to beat half the teams in the Sunbelt.  We don't need to laugh off their game against them.

    3.  I don't understand the economics of renting Joe Robbie to play in front of 1,000 people, plus pay OSU for coming out.  Someone please explain.

    4.  OSU is going to get killed in the Big 12.  How have they sunk so far in one year?

FAU fan here. I was reading other Sun Belt teams boards and thought i'd chime in. I agree with most of your observations. The only comments i'd make would be that FAU does have some offensive weapons, especially at WR and TE, but Embick had no time to throw in the 2nd half. They are very young, mostly freshman or sophs playing in their first college games, but if you saw the Kansas game, they did make a number of big plays.

Second, most people in the crowd were also wondering why the game last night wasn't at Lockhart Stadium(where our other home games are played). Not only because that stadium is only 15 minutes from campus, as opposed to 40 minutes as Dolphins Stadium is, but also because that crowd would have looked much better on TV in a much smaller stadium. I guess the thought was that OSU would have brought a bigger crowd, but that backfired. OSU didn't bring more than 1,000 fans, and the Dolphins Stadium is so far from campus, that many FAU students didn't show. the crowd was definately a disappointment, but better than in years past. Given time, the crowd's will come.

As for the economics, appearently with the game moved from Saturday to Thursday to accomodate TV, ESPN2 paid out enough to cover OSU and FAU was off the hook for the $150,000 that they would have paid the Cowboys to come to South Florida. So FAU, who paid $70,000 to rent the stadium, got to pocket the extra $80,000.

Anyway, I can't wait for our game against you guys later this season. Should be a fun year for the Sun Belt!
