5 things SMU fans need to know about North Texas

2. Greer connection- SMU has had trouble landing quarterbacks from its own backyard. But did you know Greer was almost a Mustang? Here is what he had to say about SMU during the recruiting process: “SMU is a great school, and they run the exact same offense we run at Arlington. I’d fit in well at SMU. Coach (June) Jones and Coach (Dan) Morrison have a great resume when it comes to teaching quarterbacks. SMU has an up and coming program.” After landing Neal Burcham, SMU decided not to offer Greer.

5. Rivalry- SMU’s big rival is obviously TCU. But North Texas apparently considers SMU its biggest rival. In case you missed it, you should really check out George Dunham’s epic rant on the subject. But the fact of the matter is SMU has dominated the all-time series, 28-4-1. To be considered a rivalry game, both sides must be competitive. The “Safeway Bowl” has been anything but.

The 28-4-1 junk is thrown out there too much. For all but five of those games either we were not in the same division of football, or SMU was paying players. On equal footing (same division, no pro athletes), the series is 2-3. Opportunity this Saturday to make it 3-3.

Did they have to forfeit any wins they had from victories over us? If so, is that taken into account in 28-4-1 number? Edited by Army of Dad

Not according to the Wiki article...

The penalties handed down, in detail:

  • The 1987 season was canceled; only conditioning drills were permitted during the 1987 calendar year.
  • All home games in 1988 were canceled. SMU was allowed to play their seven regularly scheduled away games so that other institutions would not be financially affected.
  • The team's existing probation was extended until 1990. Its existing ban from bowl games and live television was extended to 1989.
  • SMU lost 55 new scholarship positions over 4 years.
  • SMU was required to ensure that Owen and eight other boosters previously banned from contact with the program were in fact banned, or else face further punishment.
  • The team was allowed to hire only five full-time assistant coaches, instead of the typical nine.
  • No off-campus recruiting was permitted until August 1988, and no paid visits could be made to campus by potential recruits until the start of the 1988-89 school year.
