And to get a foot in the door in an extremely competitive business, a coach often has to start on the bottom rungs of the ladder. Gill began his career as a volunteer assistant on Tom Osborne’s staff at Nebraska before taking a job as a graduate assistant at North Texas, where he completed his undergraduate degree.

Gill remembers some of the valuable lessons he learned from those roles.

“It’s a great way to learn the game of football,” Gill said. “You learn a lot, looking at things from different perspectives. It can help you, no matter what position you end up coaching, you have a better understanding of the game.”
