Miners praising Coach Mac

Dan McCarney, the head coach at UNT and former head man at Iowa St, is in his 3rd year for the Mean Green. They just became bowl eligible last night for the first time in quite a while. They are still in the running for the west division title and are a senior laden team. Dan McCarney had proved that he could produce a winner at a school that normally lost big when he was at Iowa St but ended with a losing season in 2006 and got canned.

Trying to find parallels to the UTEP situation I looked at the UNT recruiting for the past few years. According to Rivals when you average the UNT rankings from 2010 thru 2013 you come up with an average of 104th out of 120 plus schools. UTEP's average over the same period, oddly enough, is also 104. That is obviously not a detailed recruiting report but it does indicate that UNT is winning now with about the same grade of athlete that UTEP now has. Coaching has made a big difference for UNT but they do have a coach that has done it before and has taken his 3rd year to produce a winner. Our coach is still an unknown until we see results over the next few years. Also, McCarney has developed a team that emphasizes the run and a tough defense and Kugler is trying to do that at UTEP as well.
