Here's the key section to the article:

"First, they (Northwestern) were clearly looking to other candidates at some point. The Wildcats could be scheming, though leads would have emerged by now if this were a continued pursuit. But someone had, or still has, an extended offer to join the 2014 recruiting class. Someone not named Xavier Washington or Jared McGee."

Exactly how does a "grey shirt " work?

Per Ask.com
A grey shirt in college football is a freshman athlete, one who has just completed high school, who does not enrol in the institution with the others in the fall, but waits until the second semester. Some institutions grey shirt a player because they have a small class or because they have already committed to a certain number of prospects.

So does that count as a redshirt?

No. They grayshirt their first semester of college by taking less than 12 hours, delaying eligibility by being a part-time student.

Example: Avery Fortenberry grayshirted for us. He graduated high school in 2013, but did not enroll as a full-time student until this semester. He is now with the team and he will sign with this class (2014) on Wednesday. He will be classified as a true freshman in the fall, so he can still redshirt.

Essentially a kid can graduate high school, grayshirt, and then redshirt then play as a redshirt freshman despite actually having been out of high school for two seasons prior.

So does that count as a redshirt?

No, and they don't count against the scholarship limit until the next season.

There are real benefits to receiving a grey shirt. College entry is delayed for one semester giving these new signees the opportunity to work out 24/7 like pro athletes with a weightroom and excercise regimen directed by the strength and conditioning coach. The benefit that parents see is that their kid will receive 9 semesters of paid education instead of 8 (11 if there's a redshirt year). This enables athletes to graduate and start working on graduate programs while still on scholarship.

They can't be in contact with our coaches during the semester that they are grayshirting. Not sure if you were saying that or not.

Big 10 vs. AAC & CUSA. Your choice? Grey shirt would allow him to ease into academics.

From all accounts, Xavier is in the upper academic percentile of his HS class as it is. Not sure he'd need to ease into academics no matter who he signs with. Just sayin'...that's all.

He knows who wants and needs him most. If he says see ya' later North Texas what more can we say than...

"good luck, Xavier."

One player does not a program make, but Xavier I feel knows by now which college forum message board has given him the most love but as they say.............it still takes 2 to tango.

Amazing how so many of us live a segment of our lives thru the eye lenses of 17 and 18 year olds, isn't it? :) Yet...would we be here if we didn't like it? LOL!

GMG!

Grey shirt might also allow him to fall off the face of the world. It's a slippery slop offering a guy with this much upside a grey shirt. I would run from that and go elsewhere if I were him. UNT or not.

Not necessarily. Would you say the same about Chumley, Jackson, etc... that are or have been grayshirts here?

Don't grayshirts pay their own way for the first semester while they're part-time?

Paying your own way at Northwestern...? I would never accept a grayshirt at a private school.

However, it sounded like they rescinded the grayshirt offer and offered X a full-ride. If that's the case, I can't blame him because Northwestern is a heckuva school, but its gonna be terrible that his family cannot make every home game and most away games...
