One option worth exploring might be Army, currently a football independent. Army opted to leave Conference USA after the 2004 season due to an inability to field a competitive program in conference play. In seven seasons in Conference USA (1998-2004), Army compiled a 13-67 record. Army has not exactly been all that competitive since leaving the conference either, and with longtime service academy rival Navy finally deciding to align in a conference starting in 2015 it is an idea worth reviewing at Army.

For Conference USA, welcoming back Army now might lead to better results for the Black Knights, as the conference is bringing in new, young and raw programs making the transition to FBS competition and bringing in programs looking to step up from Sun Belt and the WAC. Army has had just one winning season since going 10-2 in 1996. Despite their on field performance, Army is still a respected brand of sorts and one that would likely be welcomed by Conference USA quickly if the program decided to consider a return.

I have a hard time for the same reasons I find the Navy move puzzling. They are locked in to playing Navy and Air Force. Add 8 conference games and there are only 2 non-conference to play. Congress and the Pentagon like them to play all over the country as a recruiting tool for the service and Congressional goodwill.

They make more off TV than than CUSA can offer so will have to have special status until their deals expire then they take a cut in revenue? They have no trouble finding willing bowls.

Ironically, 2 of those 13 wins came against UNT.
