Standout cornerback Chad Davis commits to UNT

“Chad’s a great man-to-man cornerback,” Bush coach Allen Aldridge said. “We blitzed 90 to 95 percent of the time. He was the guy we put on the other team’s best receiver. He also became more physical this year. That was the one question scouts really had about him.”

What no one has questioned is Davis’ speed. He was a member of Bush’s 800-meter relay team that finished third at the state track meet in a time of 1:24.9 last spring and has been a member of the varsity track team since his freshman year.

“I’m an aggressive, physical corner, but I’m also fast,” Davis said.

Those assets could help Davis make an immediate impact at UNT, which struggled at times in its secondary last season. UNT ranks fifth out of 10 teams in the Sun Belt Conference with an average of 251.5 passing yards allowed a game.

This should be great competition among potentially four of the best corners we've had. Last year, we had one hurt corner (Warner), an unknown running back turned cornerback and a servicable backup (Jackson). This year we could have a semi-healthy Warner, a second-team all-conference corner (Whitfield), a JUCO all-american (Jones), and a top-notch recruit in Chad Davis. In addition, Jackson returns as the only senior, Devante Davis and Xavier Kelly got some experience, and newcomer John Schilleci all look like good FBS players.

If every postition were facing improvement as much as cornerback, I'd definitely buy into an 8-win season. It would not surprise me to see Jackson and Schilleci moved to safety. Cornerback should definitely be the strongest defensive position and may be the strongest on the team.

Schilleci played safety when I saw him in the state title game. And I'd say he looks like one who would benefit from a redshirt year.

But he was a 3 star recruit. I mean, that puts him right up there. At least he's not a converted HS running back, a 2 star or a recruit not offered by other D1 schools. Seriously though, he signed and I never heard another word about him.

Absolutely. Watching him play makes me nervous. I'm glad we landed a kid from Guyer, hopefully Shilleci won't be the last one we land, but I look at a guy like Kenny buyers who was first-team all district as a junior and senior for LD Bell yet walked on for us and contributed as a true freshman. He hasn't even finished high school so he has plenty of time to improve, but I see him headed for a redshirt season.

I think it was the LSU game where he got burned pretty bad. Don't recall much of him on the field after that

I hope most of these HS kids are headed for a redshirt.

A higher % of 3* recruits become impact players than 2* recruits. Also kids with multiple D1 offers tend to outperform those with none. Why do you consider it a sin to want UNT to pull in higher rated recruits?
