Amazing factoid from the show...Tony Mitchell took one shot against Lafayette. Benford said Tony is the most unselfish player he has ever been around but they need him to be more selfish for the good of his team.

So never during a timeout/halftime did Benford not think to tell Tony to maybe try a shot or what he needs to do against ULL defense to get his offense going?

Preface: The entirety of my basketball education can be traced back to Dennis Hopper drunkenly coaching the Hoosiers after Gene Hackman told the ref to throw him out of the game.

Now then, if I didn't know any better, it almost looked like Tony Mitchell was on strike during the ULL game. Like he almost purposely tried to NOT get touches.

I never said I was. By educated I meant played college ball or coached high school ball and above.

I'm sorry but 18 year old men go to war and die for this country. You are ging to tell me that these 20 year old men are any different?

A man is a man and anyone 18 and up is a man.

I am not saying anyone on these boards as "stupid" or "knows nothing". Everything is an opinion. That is exactly what I have, an opinion equal to anyone else's. I am not "basketball stupid" but I am also no coach K. I just enjoying watching and playing the game (years ago).

Understand that coaches do get blamed and fired for having losing seasons. Sometimes it is the coach and sometimes it is the players. I just cannot see how the players look blameless in any of this.

The reason Roger got the ball down low and Tony didn't is because Roger faught to get in front of his man in the post. Tony was content to let his guy front him and then call for a lob, which would have been stupid with another LaLa player waiting for the pass behind Tony. Benford should of told Tony "you can post up strong or sit your ass down," never happened. Is this the offenses design? Doubt it, but when a coach won't make a player do what the coach wants (yes, good coaches do that all the time. It's called earning your floor minutes), it might as well be a part of the offense.

Tony got really frustrated very quickly. I don't really blame him.

I'll make this really simple. There is no lack of talent on this team. If it is the players not working hard, that is the coach's fault. If it is the players not buying in to what the coach is preaching, that is the coach's fault. If the players are lazy and not rebounding and playing defense, that is the coach's fault.

Get it??

And no, being 18 doesn't make you a mature adult, and especially not a mature basketball player.

A year ago people threw a fit when Jordan and Chris failed classes. They were men then. Now all of the sudden we get a new coach and they not? I liked Johnny and I like Benford. It is/was neither mans job to baby these players. The players are not hustling plain and simple. Blame the coaches blame the players. Let's just stop whining and enjoy unt basketball! We are turning into the players pouting because we are not happy. Bigger things occur in the world. Have a little faith people. We are a long way from the end. :)

Do you really believe it is that simple? Everything is the coaches fault? It seems extremely single minded to me.

Did you always do you chores? Did you always make your bed? Is it your parents fault you did not?did you not respect your parents? Maybe you did all of this I have no clue.

I'm pretty sure that being 40 doesn't make me a mature adult.

I was gonna say, I don't feel like a grown ass man at 34. :D

But yeah, 18 or 20 is not a grown man. You might be legally an adult, but most aren't "grown ups" in any real way.

According to this thread, I just may be basketball smart. Anyways, I would guess that several players who are counted on still have the AAU bug. No urgency, and no understanding of the traditional authority of a coach. Team hasn't jelled obviously. Oh no, it might take harder work than anticipated. and, maybe the star player webpage that leads this forum can take a powder til a double double arrives. I don't care how much buzz TM has created, there are holes in his game that are easy to take adv. of. If he can get 1 shot in 9 minutes, he needs to whip some ass on his own team. That kid is no where near professional level with the little things. So maybe tap the breaks on the superman stuff. it may take him longer for his bb iq to catch up with his talent.Lights go on for some at different times--These guys need to compete. There's a reason some are so open-they need to be wise enough to realize it and not give in. + if anyone even acts like they arent all in this quick, Coach does have to locate that.

I'm sorry Andrew I don't know who you are and I'm not trying to attack you personally, but you really don't have a clue if you think we can sit here and "enjoy UNT basketball," in it's current form. It's just not fun to watch, be it the coach's fault or the players. Especially when what has taken years to built is not being torn apart brick by brick, but by a swift push of the dynamite plunger. We just have to disagree. I'm am glad you don't take NT sports as seriously as some. I guess I have to get to the point so many alums have figured out, forget about it all and abandon the program. It sure make life easier not having to worry about how one's donation dollars and ticket dollars are spent. I hope this thing turns around. I really do and I'm sincere in saying I hate to see people lose their jobs, unless its because unscrupulous things have been done, which I can't say things haven't been shady. I really do for the players' sake.

I do not take anything personal that is written online. I just enjoy the sport and the team. I loved going to games when I was younger and still do. I am actually a pretty die hard fan, but I guess I am a glass half full person. I sold this team hard over the summer and still am. I have tried and convinced a lot of people to at least come out and watch a game. I talk up this team all day everyday. I enjoyed the lala game though I was disappointed. I did want to yell out a couple times and boththe players and the coach but I was just a tad to far from the court... Perhaps I will see you there Saturday who knows.

Would it help if I predict a win Wednesday against st louis? This is my one call for the year. I think the team is tired of getting walked over. The players know Benfords system works they just need to fully buy into it. Their mindset is off right now. Wednesday perhaps it will be right :)

How could they possibly know this since the success of his "system" has yet to be seen anywhere?

Because at least two of the players have said this. Now maybe they lied and are making excuses but I give them the benefit of the doubt.

We know 18year olds that are mature, and 40 year olds that cry over a spilled McDonalds coffee. Let's not split hairs there.

Worth the read: How basketball players gain confidence

How do you get confidence on the court? You prepare.

If you believe that a coach's responsibility is to prepare players, than IMO you can't deny that a coach factors into the team shooting.

I agree that a lot of the work ethic and discipline comes from the players end, but I also have seen great shooters thrown in situations that make them toss bricks.

Good teams, that is well-coached teams, are mentally prepared and confident. That's when shots start to fall.

I'm 100% behind our teams and coaches, but that doesn't mean I have to think they are capable.

**EDIT: more good reading

What a truly asinine comparison. But, since you made it, let me point out how it illustrates all that many of is have been saying. When I was young and didn't do my chores, homework, etc my mother punished me. She parented (coached) to correct the behavior. At no point did she say "Hey, it's not my fault, I told him what to do and turned him loose". Even if it meant correcting the behavior repeatedly the "coaching" was ever present.

Well, I was actually about 1 minute into the process of cleaning my room when my mommy came in, pulled me to the couch, and put my sister in to finish cleaning.

If the players are as responsible as you suggest the are, Andrew, we could go the player-coach route and save ourselves 350K per annum, huh?

Yelling at players to "try harder" ignores pretty much every thing anyone has learned about management in the last 100 years. I also don't buy the B-Walt/TJ Taylor reasoning. This isn't a case of just missing open shots. The entire offense is lacking organization which contributes heavily to the poor shooting (offense produces poor/rushed/non-rhythm shots that get missed). Nearly every player is shooting worse (Jacob Holmen excepted).

And all the frustrating inconsistent play that included losses to teams we had no business losing to by Jones coached teams? It happens to everyone. Jones did good things here. Not taking that away, but he left on his own.

Benford has stuff to learn that can only be learned by being the man. No question he will make some mistakes. As he said tonight, our defense must improve and our perimeter defenders have to stop playing Michael Finley swinging gate style defense. And we have to improve on 279th ranked shooting percentage.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink (or make a basket evidently). We are starting to get enough tape of these guys playing together to start showing them how freaking horrible they have been and how out of position they frequently are.

If our 3 prima donnas played with half as much heart as Roger Franklin, this would be a moot point.

If Benford's first recruiting class (so far) is any indication of the type of talent he can bring in here, we will be just fine, regardless of how this season turns out. Unlike many on here who have already jumped off, I happen to think we can still do good things this year.

I'll take another helping of this dose of reality please and thank you! Well said!
