Texas State changing name to Armadillos?

#1: “Bobcats” is a Terrible Nickname

There’s really not much that needs to be said about this. Bobcats is a generic nickname that isn’t original, intimidating or exciting. It’s hands down the worst nickname in the NBA (made worse by the fact it was meant as a pun to honor founding owner Robert Johnson) and just sounds like it’s made for a high school football team, not an FBS power.

Obviously armadillos are not intimidating, but they are loveable in their own way and completely original. Texas State would definitely stand out with the nickname “Armadillos” just like the Oregon Ducks have for years.

#2: Armadillos Are Identified With Texas

While bobcats do live in Texas, I challenge you to find anyone that says “Texas” when they are asked what state they identify most with bobcats. Now ask people what state they most associate armadillos with. My guess is nine out of 10 people who can answer the question would say Texas. No one is prouder of their state than Texans and it’s about time Texas State started honoring a native son instead of just another cat species.

#3: Free PR

Just imagine the national press Texas State would get from changing their names to “Armadillos” like Necessary Roughness, possibly the funniest college football movie of all time. It’s the kind of “ZOMG!” moment that would be covered by all the major sports outlets and spread like wildfire on social media.

The school could take it even further by having Scott Bakula bobblehead night, have Kathy Ireland show up at media day in her kicker’s uniform or have Sinbad comedy acts at pep rallies (OK, having heard Sinbad’s routine, scratch that last one). If the blue field at Boise State can still be making news after a quarter century, imagine the marketing possibilities of a rebranding to “Armadillos.”

As a real Texan, the main mental visual I have of an armadillo is a dead one laying on its back on the shoulder of one of our highways with a Lone Star beer fitting quite nicely on top its belly.

Is this for real for TSU-SM to change their mascot?

GMG!

PS: Little did we know how that Paramount sports movie classic :thumbsd: "Necessary Roughness" would play in the future of (then) Southwest Texas State U. :)

As former Texas Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower once said in relation to middle-of-the-roaders: "There is nothing in the middle of the road but yellow stripes and dead armadillos".
