Why North Texas Needs CUSA

Remember not too long ago when the collegiate scene was in a panicked frenzy about supposed “mega-conferences,” and everyone was scrambling because they didn’t want to be left out? Everyone was discarding lifelong traditions to look out for their own interests.

Heck, at one point it was as if colleges were stepping up to the “Price is Right” wheel and spinning it to see where they should go. (Texas A&M to the Southeastern Conference, anyone?)

Way before that hysteria, a vacancy opened up in Conference USA in 2004, and UNT was in contention for a bid. Texas-El Paso wound up filling that void, leaving UNT in the Sun Belt Conference.

ESPN.com’s Andy Katz recently reported UNT could again be in contention for a CUSA spot starting in the 2013-2014 season after the conference lost Southern Methodist, Central Florida, Memphis and Houston to the Big East.

If given the opportunity, UNT can’t let the bid slip away again.

Since the 1950s, UNT has been a part of four different conferences: the Missouri Valley Conference, the Southland Conference, the Big West Conference and the Sun Belt. CUSA needs to be next.

In 2004, one of the main reasons UTEP was taken over UNT was because of its commitment to having top athletic facilities and being competitive.

Since then, UNT’s done both.

Hmmm....Marshall is in Texas?

There was a "Marshall University" there, long since discontinued, and East Texas Baptist used to be "College of Marshall", according to this:

"Marshall" in Marshall, Texas

Take that information and two dollars, and you could buy a cup of coffee at Starbucks. I haven't spent much time in Marshall, it being the natural rival of my favorite in that area, Jefferson, but Wendy Reves, good friend of Winston Churchill and benefactor of the Dallas Museum of Art, was from there.

Maybe once we're in CUSA, we can stop in Marshall to see their Christmas decorations (another Reves gift) on our way to see the Mean Green Play in the Liberty Bowl.

Confusing a very small podunk town Marshall, TX and Marshall University located in WV is really more than just a mistake in my opinion. Heck there was even a pretty big and popular movie made on the university just a few years ago.

The movie you are talking about is the "Great Debaters" about Wyley College in Marshall, Texas, is it not?

As an aside, the sports reporting in the NTD has improved so much over a few years ago, that I can forget a few miscues.

On the other hand it kind of shows you where Marshall U stands in the mind of the common man.

As someone who attended 2 years of Jr. High in Marshall TX, I can only hope that the Marshall U's approach to education is diffurnt. (OK OK it wasn't really so bad and there are truly some super nice people over there.)

They're kids that a.) get paid and b.) will be going to a professional job where mistakes like yesterday get you fired.

A) They get paid well less than minimum wage. B) Mistakes like yesterday are why you work at a STUDENT newspaper - it's a learning experience.

They're kids...let's cut them some slack. They obviously got very excited about the story and made a mistake which all of us (other than UNT90  ) make.

Im perfeckt.

Seriously, one of the ways you learn from your mistakes (and laziness) is to be corrected. If the writer does read this board (highly doubtful), I bet this is a miostake he/she doesn't make again. The writer is obviously not a sports fan, which is fine, but when writing about something you are unfamiliar with, you should take extra time to make sure what you write doesn't contain very basic errors.

Or we could just give this kid a participation award.
