There are a couple of ways to look at this...

One the BE needs a second team to get to 12 and takes UCF or UH and that leaves CUSA and MWC with holes. With MWC having the better bid and looking to get to AQ status they might offer UH if they don't go to the Big East and SMU or UNT to try to keep the Dallas market as a viable media destination.

The best part out of this is that TCU is not a regional player against UNT. SMU can only be in either the CUSA or MWC. One of those two are going to need to get another team in DFW for broadcast rights to be maintained longterm. That is great for UNT.

The Big East also needs a third and fourth team to get to 12. TCU gets them to 9.

It looks like they are considering the possibility of a few more schools but in football only.

For all we know, this could be just the first domino to drop in expansion. With TCU, the league now has 17 teams. The Big East has offered Villanova a chance to join in football, b ut the Philadelphia school seems to be dragging its feet about a decision and there is always a chance the Big East could invite Central Florida or even re-invite Temple to create a 10th football team and an 18th team in the league.

I think we're overlooking the negative effects this might have on our basketball recruiting. A DFW school that we currently effectively recruit against now is in the best basketball conference where they will not be relevant and get their ass handed to them every single game and will need to go out of conference to win a game.

First off, this is a good move all around for DFW football. It's a win, win, win really.

Obviously for TCU it's a win because they are going to an AQ conference (easily the weakest and easiest to stay undefeated in) so their undefeated seasons will have "meaning". Don't get me started on the joke that is ESPN analysts saying they weren't legit before, but now there is no longer any built in BCS crap excuse. Add to this that the UT's, aTm's, OU's of the world have now lost their single best piece of ammunition against TCU. The "yeah they're good but can you ever play for a national title there?" pitch just went out the window. Sorry Big XII. Also, their basketball just got significantly better just by association. The flipside is that the Big East (though they've never needed the help) now has a reason to come into DFW to play in front of recruits EVERY year.

This is a win for NT because it opens up a spot somewhere. (They're already on ESPN radio talking about how SMU is a natural travel partner and how they help "deliver" the DFW market-- I'll conveniently ignore the fact that NT, if put in an AQ conference, would dwarf any/all advantages SMU could offer by sheer force of alumni alone) IF, and it's a big IF, SMU could get into the BE (or MWC)it would leave no DFW team in CUSA. That's good for us. If Houston leaves CUSA too it really opens things up for us because now they're looking for two and we look attractive along with La Tech. No matter how the musical chairs work it puts the onus on RV and company to have us sitting somewhere better when the music stops. I say call the BE and mention the prospect of a travel partner with 100,000 alumni in that DFW TV market you're trying to secure. Think our fans wouldn't come to the stadium for Louisville, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, etc? Let's not even think about how quickly NT/TCU tickets would get gobbled up. Think they wouldn't tune in in DROVES to watch us play on national TV?

The biggest winner though may be SMU. SMU sits in a decent position to follow TCU east or to be in the running for their open slot in MWC. Even if they don't move at all they're still better off. It has been proven that teams from non-AQ conferences can get to BCS bowls (Hawaii and Boise from the WAC, TCU and Utah from MWC). IF, and again a big IF, SMU were to run the table under the current landscape...that is, with TCU still in MWC...they'd have an outside chance at making real national noise. With TCU gone to BE there is now that "marquee" team on SMU's schedule every seaon in the Iron Skillet game. A ranked TCU out of the MWC is one thing...a ranked TCU out of the BE is another.

All around DFW just became a LOT more exciting in sports.

Emmitt, A TCU and UNT rivalry in the BE would be amazing. The metroplex would be crazy on those weekends. Think the conference would actually consider this and try to put a big cap on the media markert? Other than our recent record, our program is probably more appealing and profitable than SMU.

There is no possible way UNT gets an invite to the BE, not unless our athletics (especially football) make huge waves at the national level in the next few years.

I like the thought of this, but a 2 private school rivalry would probably be much easier to sell. This is where I see us not fitting.

Well, we're in the best position we possibly could be this time around. Our president has been heavily involved with college athletics, we're building a new stadium, we're hiring a respected coach, basketball has been on a great run for years, and we've been commissioning Neinas for a few months now.

If we're still in the SBC after all is said and done, it won't be for lack of trying.
