All I have heard is that course avaliability will remain the same, but sparse sections will be combined. Then I got this email and got worried:

February 18, 2003

Greetings,

We are pleased you are a student in the University of North Texas

College of Education.

As you have probably heard or read, the State of Texas has requested

that universities statewide return funds to the State. The University

of North Texas must return seven percent (7%) of its funds for the

current fiscal year. This could affect the number and scheduling of

courses in the forthcoming semesters. The College of Education faculty

and staff are working hard to serve you and maintain the integrity of

our academic programs for this summer. Since the printed schedule of

classes was prepared, changes in course offerings may have taken place.

Please refer to the schedule of classes website (www.unt.edu/catsched)

from time to time for an

up-to-date listing of classes being offered during the 2003 May

Mini-mester, Summer I, and Summer II sessions.

Please register and pay your tuition early to ensure you are in the

classes that you need. Please continue checking the drop and add

feature of registration to adjust your schedule.

The Student Advising Office, staff in Matthews Hall 105, are available

to help you Monday-Friday, 8:00 am. 5:00 p.m. Also, your faculty

advisors are available to you. And again, check the schedule of classes

website often.

Please work with us to meet your needs for summer by planning,

registering, and paying tuition early so that you and we can know which

classes will be offered.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

M. Jean Keller

Dean

CAS is huge, about half the buildings on campus belong to CAS. CAS also has about 1/2 of all of the students on campus, and almost every single student who attends UNT has to spent quite a bit of time in CAS classes to complete the "core" portion of thier degree.

In other words, its huge, and the support staff it has is huge and well funded. I would expect for most of the departments to not replace staff as they leave naturally, making services slower, but keeping the amount of services almsot unchanged.

Also, and this is a big factor, CAS has by far the largest amount of Grant money coming in, and most of that is long term and is not going to be effected by the weak economy for a while.

I can't tell you about the CAS as a whole, but in terms of my department within the college we have not yet been led to believe that we will have to cut courses in the fall. We have consolidated some summer courses. I expect to be teaching the courses that I am currently scheduled to teach next year. Hopefully we will weather the budget cuts!
