Poinsettia wants Navy -- with 6 wins

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Navy will return to the Poinsettia Bowl if it wins at least six games this season.

If eligible, Navy would play the second selection from the Mountain West Conference. The date for this year's game hasn't been set, although it will be played before Christmas.

Last season, Navy cut a similar, one-year deal with the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Navy earned a bowl bid for the fourth consecutive season and lost 25-24 to Boston College.

The Midshipmen played in the inaugural Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego two years ago, and beat Colorado State 51-30.

The Poinsettia Bowl is sponsored by the San Diego County Credit Union.

Absolutely amazing...but Navy has a good deal of folks in San Diego. The "lesser" bowls are hurting for $$$$ and crowds. This may be an effort to help "fill the stands" for this "lower tier" bowl. I agree...absolutely NOTHING is "too much" for the current bowl system. Needs to be changed...but, that is a topic for another discussion.

I have never heard of this before. A bowl making arrangements with a particular team (not conference) before the season even starts?

Sure you have. Prior to this years Fiesta Bowl, Boise State has been the InHumane Bowl's resident team for several years now. With a couple of exceptions, of course.

The Sheraton Hawaii Bowl does the same thing. It makes no bones about it that this is Hawaii's Bowl, plus no other bowl other than the Las Vegas Bowl has any interest in inviting a bowl eligible Hawaii.
