AAC Softball Tournament: 5/7 through 5/10

Rounds 1 & 2 (5/7)

Game 1: UTSA vs Tulsa 10am:  Tulsa wins 1-0.

Game 2: Memphis vs. UAB 1pm:  #10 Memphis upsets #7 UAB 6-5.

Game 3: Tulsa vs. Wichita State 4pm  Wichita St. scores three in the bottom of the sixth to win 5-2.  Tulsa left the bases loaded in the seventh to end the game.

Game 4: Memphis vs. ECU 7pm.  ECU wins 7-1 advancing to play Charlotte.

*All games EST and broadcast on ESPN+

 

Quarterfinals (5/8)

Game 5:  Wichita St. vs. UNT 12pm  UNT 8  WSU 4.

Game 6: ECU vs. Charlotte 2:30pm ECU 4  Charlotte 3.

*Both games EST and on ESPN+

 

Semifinals (5/9)

Game 7: North Texas vs. FAU 1pm ESPNU

Game 8: ECU vs. USF 3:30pm ESPN+

 

Finals (5/10)

Game 9: UNT vs. USF 12pm ESPN2

Rounds 1 & 2

Tulsa wins Game 1 topping UTSA 1-0.  Tulsa now plays Wichita St at 4pm(ish) today with the winner advancing to play us tomorrow at noon.  Times noted are Eastern Standard.

Memphis upsets UAB to win Game 2 by the score of 6-5.  Memphis led 6-1 going into UAB's last at bat and survived a rally by UAB to advance to play ECU tonight at 7pm (ish).

Wichita St 2

End of fourth.

Wichita State scores 3 (3 run HR) in the bottom of the sixth to go up 5-2 and then Tulsa left the bases loaded in the top of the 7th.  WSU wins and advances to play Your North Texas Mean Green Ladies tomorrow at noon.

Memphis's season comes to an end, 7-1 against ECU. Memphis is still not good, but they definitely improved with their new head coach. First tournament win since 2018 according to their Twitter.

Anderson gets the start in the circle as we will be the home team.

Leadoff hitter for flies out, #2 batter hits a triple but is then tagged out at home trying to score on a passed ball.  Third batter is walked and then is picked off first by Moffett to end the inning.

What an interesting top half of the inning for Wichita State: first batter flies out. Second batter hits a triple but later gets caught stealing. Third batter walks, and is picked off at first.

Bottom of First:

Simon leads off with a single that the WSU second basewoman (??) almost made a diving catch on.  Immediately steals second and then scores on a single by R McNemar, who advanced to second on the throw home.  UNT 1 WSU 0.

Moffett singles to center, McNemar scores and Moffett advances to second on the throw home.  UNT 2 WSU 0.

Conley at the plate.  Conley grounds out to short, but Moffett advances to third on the slow chopper.

Bearpaw at the plate.  Lashes a double to right center.  Moffett scores on the play.  UNT 3 WSU 0.

Sparks steps in and lines a single to center.  Runners on the corners w/ one out.

Moore at the plate.  Drives the 1-1 pitch out deep to left for a 3 run HR.  UNT 6 WSU 0.

WSU replaces their pitcher.

Nicholson at the plate with one out.  Nicholson goes down looking on a borderline call.

B. McNemar at the plate.  Takes the first pitch for ball one, same location as what the ump called a strike on Nicholson on the previous pitch. Strikes out looking.

WSU 0

We have to continue to score every inning.

Walk on four pitches.  Runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs.  Need to throw strikes.

Anderson ends the inning with a strike out.

Heading to the bottom of the inning, UNT 6, WSU 0.

Simon leads off with a walk/might have hit her.  Either way, runner on first, no outs, R McNemar at the plate.

McNemar hits a flair to right, Simon forced out at second.

Moffett pops out to the infield.  Two outs, runner on first.

Conley at the plate.  Grounds out to the pitcher.

Next batter flairs one down the right field line that drops, runner scores, batter advances to third on an overthrow.  

Defense is a mess.

Runner scores on a wild pitch. UNT 6 WSU 2, no outs. (Play under review, play stands)

Runners on 1st and 2nd, no outs.  Savage coming in to replace Anderson.  Hope good Skylar shows up.

Savage strikes out the first batter she faced swinging. Still runners on 1st and 2nd with one out.

Epperson flies out to right.  Runner on second advances.  Two outs with runners on the corners.

Ground out to first.  Savage comes in and shuts down the Lady Shockers.  UNT 6 WSU 2.

 

Bottom of the 3rd:

Bearpaw, Sparks and Moore due up.

Bearpaw grounds out to second on a nice play by the secondbasewoman.  One out.

Sparks singles to left center, steals second and continues on to third on the throw.

Play under review.  Not sure for what, but this WSU Coach is a whipping.  I think she's asking for reviews so she can go grab a snack.

Moore at the plate.  Another bullshit  interference call.  Claim that Moore obstructed the catcher on the throw.  Moore is out and Sparks goes back to first. Two outs, runner on first.

Nicholson up.  Nicholson lines the 3-2 pitch to second for out number three.

End of three, UNT 6  WSU 2.

Leadoff hitter walks.  We have got to stop walking people.  Pound the strike zone.

WSU sac bunts runner to second.  Batter out at first.

One out, runner at second.#9 hitter slaps a single to left.

One out, runners on the corners, top of the order coming up.

Single slapped up the middle, run scores. Runners on first and second. UNT lead is down to 6-3.

#2 batter fouls out to left.  Runners on 1st & 2nd with two outs.

#3 hitter grounds out to third.

Headed to the bottom of the fourth, UNT up 6-3.

 

BOTTOM of 4:

I believe the top of the order is due up.

Nope. B. McNemar leads off.  Gets jammed and lines out to left.

Simon coming up.

Sierra walks on four pitches.  Runner on first, one out and R McNemar up.

Simon running on the pitch, McNemar lines out to SS who doubles Simon off first.

Death, taxes, and getting dominated by freshman Wichita State pitchers. Ryley Nihart has effectively shut us down since coming in in the first. Just like Chloe Barber nearly no-hit us twice in Denton last season.

Bearpaw walked and they pinch ran Gaddis for her, who stole second. But I'm surprised Rodney hasn't put in a Grahmann or Brock to pinch run for Conley at third. We need these two runs.

1,2,3 top of the 6th after a great play in left by B. McNemar.  Stayed with a play and caught WSU's second batter of the inning trying to stretch a double into a triple.
