Nice.
Man, TTG nailed it with that long post... at the time.
I just don't know if Hodge left that guy here. To me, the only guys who would fit that profile on our current staff are Coaches Estelle & Herl. Both should get interviews.
Remember, Coach Hodge inherited Rubin, Aaron, Moulaye, & Stone (as far as contributors were concerned).
Coach Herl or Estelle would be inheriting zero contributors unless they could convince Lorient, Newell, & possibly Floyd, if he gets his extra year of eligibility due to the new JUCO eligibility rule) to stay. I dunno if that's going to happen though.
But between TTG's post & now, the transfer portal has really taken on legs of its own. The idea of a roster being completely gutted year-over-year is not a foreign idea. So the requirement to "keep the train rolling along" doesn't make as much sense... because you're basically bringing in all new cars behind the locomotive anyway, you may as well upgrade the locomotive as well if one is available.
Otherwise, the train you keep rolling along is starring guys like Tyran Mason, Alex Cotton, Brock Vice, & Masyn Howell.
THAT is the only positive thing that could come out of this.
IF we win the NIT, there will be mentions of the fact that we had a coach win the NIT and then go to a B12 school where he was immediately successful and then his replacement repeated the act 2 years later (along with a decent season in the previous year).
However, that very small ember will only last for an extremely short time. If we follow this up with another Benford (or even a little better), we'll be right back where we were for the previous 30 years.
In the grand scheme of things, this is probably just another time when we're on the cusp of breaking through to set a new level of reputation, only to fall flat on our faces. It's what we've done for nearly 50 years.
He should be allowed to coach the rest of the NIT for the seniors. Those guys likely won't play any pro ball. This is the end of a chapter for them. Let them finish on top.
