Tyreek Smith is no longer with the Memphis basketball program and will enter the transfer portal less than seven months after transferring in this offseason from SMU, the university said in a statement on Monday. Smith will look to join his fifth different team in the last five seasons after stops at Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, SMU and Memphis.

The article mentions that the reason he is leaving is because he's not receiving the NIL dollars he thought he was promised.

Not the first time that's happened.

I guess I don't understand timelines anymore.  Sure he can hit the portal whenever, but aren't there registration deadlines for classes, that would require him to be committed to a school until the next semester registration/timeline?

Do the players not sign a formal contract for their NIL deal?  You would think that a program would want to lock down a player with a contract to prevent him from leaving for another program mid season.

how in the world do these players remain eligible? No way credits are transferring easily from public to private to instate to out of state.

I'd take him from a talent standpoint in a heart beat. He's from Baton Rouge but attended Trinity Christian Academy (Cedar Hill) where he lead them to their private school's state championship. I really wanted him at UNT but he signed with Texas A&M.

We are starting to bring in a number of 1 year players as well, so why not. Great rebounder and shot blocker at 6-9. Don't really think there would be mutual interest though.

Have almost given up trying to figure out time lines with college athletes. Tell me how in the world athletes can transfer three or four times and still be on any path to have the proper amount of hours at a school to graduate. It has become a total joke.

What's happened to APR?  Is that still a thing?  It used to be that if more than a few players left a football program (much more so a basketball program) without graduating in the same year, it would kill a team's APR.

I agree with you from the talent standpoint, but I always question these type of guys.  From Baton Rouge, but went to TC Cedar Hill.  Signed with aTm, then went to SMU, then to Memphis, now to ??? No stability whatsoever and I think there’s a reason for that.  Not sure what the reason is, but it’s not good.

I agree with your agreement but again, we just signed 3 guys with 1 year of eligibility left. Times have changed. Some school(s) will jump on him feeling that he hasn't been convicted of any rapes, 34 felony counts or incited any riots; where folks were killed. Fans won't care about his character if he can help a school win.

If Memphis's huge NIL stash couldn't satisfy him, I don't think we'll have anywhere near the kind of dough he's looking for.

If he is so good, then why didn't Memphis pay him?  why didn't he have an iron clad contract?  There is something missing from this story, my guess is he failed to meet some sort or criteria in order to receive his NIL money, probably on the education side of things.
