UAB's Big Screw Up

Trent Dilfer was a horrible hire. His team lost to Tulane by 51 today. They're 1-4. No one was at the game.

When Bill Clark quit in June 2022....Bryant Vincent was named interim HC. He lead the team to a 6-6 record, and a win in the Bahamas Bowl. (they finished 7-6).

Players wanted Vincent kept as the HC....but the university went ahead and hired Trent Dilfer (former NFL QB)....but who had only been a HC in high school.

Anyway.....that same Bryant Vincent was hired by ULM. They're 3-1 this year....and are leading James Madison at the half tonight.

Ya I thought they did Vincent dirty

Maybe they need to shut down their program every 10 years and spend a couple of years loading up with a bunch of 25 year olds?

Proof that it's not always the amount of money you spend. This gent is the ULM Def. Coordinator. His first year being a college DC. I would bet money that the DC at UNC makes at least $1 million. I'd also bet that every defensive position coach on Mack Brown's staff makes more than Earnest Hill does at ULM. Well, Mr. Hill and his staff shut down James Madison....a team that had scored 60+ points two games in a row. And put 70 on that UNC staff. Side note: Our former DC and assistant Troy Reffett is on the ULM staff, too:

At this point you have to say that ULM is the coaching performance of the year based on the budget they work with.

Yes, but

I would want out of Monroe based on this alone.

That is paying tribute to a world war II fighter pilot group

My bad for the lack of research/paying attention.  That is actually a cool idea.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here's a pretty decent takedown of Dilfer: https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/trent-dilfer-inherited-an-ascending-uab-program-but-its-taken-him-less-than-two-years-to-crater-it/

Amazingly, all five touchdowns UAB has scored in AAC play were in the second half while trailing by at least four touchdowns. This is a team that has been competitive for essentially zero seconds against FBS opponents.

I know you have to beat the good teams to start showing you belong but it sure would be nice to have them for HC in two weeks instead of Tulane.

We didn’t come to the American to play weenie hut junior football. We want to play games on Saturdays? We have to compete. College football is getting harder, budgets are tighter, and it’s hard to find a bar in Georgia to watch ESPNU during the same time slot as Texas vs UGA.

I hate this for the UAB faithful.    Literally going from the brink of program shutdown, to drumming up a ton of support, and achieving a nice level of success... only to see it spiral down the toilet for a silly experiment.

I haven't paid any attention to what's been happening at UAB, so I didn't know most of the things mentioned in the article.  Specifically, I didn't know that when Clark retrired in 2022, that the interim coach (Vincent) wasn't retained even after leading them to a bowl victory and he's now the coach that has ULM at 5-1.

They were shut down. The Alabama BoR had to get a police escort off campus, otherwise they wouldn't have made it out... period.

Perfect example of why fans of G5 programs should NEVER root for the likes of texas u. If given the opportunity to do so, they would shut down the other programs in their systems,  just like bama did.
