I find this surprising, as the Rainbow Warriors play football in a high school stadium and I doubt the rest of their facilities are up to D1 standards. I guess its cheaper to continue to supplement their travel expenses that add someone like SAC STATE. The SAC KINGS just offered their arena to the Hornets when open dates are available so they are getting a lot of community support in the nation's 20th largest media market.

The rest of the MWC just needs to overrule UNM.  NMSU would be a great fit and already a rival to both UNM and UTEP.

My understanding is the SEC overruled A&M on adding UT. But UT brings a LOT more to a conference than NMSU does. @Arkstfan I think pointed out a post several years ago NMSU was only admitted to several conference because they had absolutely no other choice. That was how they got into the Belt the first time, into the Big West, and at least one other conference they were in. I don't know their reasons, but no one has wanted NMSU in their conference for decades if it was avoidable.

They bring nothing to the table. No market, no fans ,no money.

They used to have great men's basketball.

Agreed, but coach was fired 2 years ago for allowing allowing hazing plus one player had gun incident in Albuquerque when they were playing UNM. All the players left and they brought in Sam Houston State coach for a total rebuild. However this realignment is all about football and size of media market. Las Cruces is the 2nd largest city in New Mexico with urban population of 141,000 surrounded by desert with a mountain range to the east and about a 45 minute drive from El Paso. The New Mexico State University campus in Las Cruces has 12,600 enrolled students this fall. A few years ago the Aggies were invited to a bowl game in Arizona and their president made a public statement that the school might not be able to afford to send their team. They did go and if memory serves won. This is the girl that you would take home at closing time only if you were really drunk.

Which I think is stupid if that's New Mexico's stance.

The MWC has UTEP [El Paso] and UNM [Albuquerque]. Why would they want a small state school in an isolated  Urban area of 140,000 with no media market, no money, and few fans?

I agree. However NMSU is in a tough spot. In the future the P4 will probably play fewer G5 schools and the Aggies athletic budget is predicated on several big money games a year. They could drop to 1AA but might lose games with UTEP and UNM which are profitable. In addition they would be either the furthermost  school to the S/E or S/W of the two closest 1AA programs.

In 5 years there will be no more P4-G5 regular season games.

Good for the Rainbow Warriors. When they are good they get an all island following and have good reach into the mountain west especially Las Vegas!
