I was surprised a little bit at first with the reaction I got from my initial post. Then, it dawned on me.. You guys are acting like any healthy Division I school should. You're fired up about your team and pissed that an alumn could possibly cheer against his own school. I respect that and understand it to a certain extent.

What you need to realize is that I went to UNT at a time when they were not even in the same league as CU. CU had been my team since birth. NTSU averaged about 5,000 fans per game. Fouts field was not a place where most students watched football games Our gym class used it to run the three mile conditioning program. I loved running up and down the bleachers every day. How many times was UNT on national television in the 80's? Do you think anyone really talked UNT football in those days? I chose NTSU for it's excellent music program.

The ironic thing is that between 1981-1983, NTSU probably could have whipped CU, during our days of baby blue jerseys and Chuck Fairbanks as coach. We lost to Drake twice!

Well Buffalo Bob, I disagree, granted I was not a CU fan sense birth, I was a pretty big fan back in High School and was up untill the time I started attending UNT. Then my loyalty switched. It just can see you being a CU fan, but why not root for your alma matter for just one game. I take it you have a job sir, and you would not have that if it were not for UNT. So why root for a school that has not done anything for you other than give you somethingto do on the weekends during the fall?

Cheer for who you want, but how in the hell you expected a reaction other than the one you got is beyond me. If you haven't been to Denton recently, you should check it out. Colorado has a lot more to do with my job than the degree from UNT. Besides, I paid dearly to go to school out of state at NTSU. A college degree is a neccessity, but has very little to do with our success in the real world. God knows, I gave North Texas enough of my money.

I've been to Denton in the past 3 years. It is a thriving, nice little town. I am not sure how safe it is.

I did get shot at in my car on Mulberry Street back in 1984, but I suppose that can happen anywhere.

I would suggest you don't hang around that area. I was told there were 13 muggings there during the month of that incident.

No offese to you personally but you represent everything that this school has done wrong for the last 50 years. I'm not even going to get into it again...I have covered it all in past posts...and I have stirred up enough hornets nest, but dog gone it...you could have been exhibit A in some of my arguments.

Thank you Bob...you may step down from the bench....next up is VP______ who is going to tell us why NT waisted millions upon millions developing a first class Music Institution at a PUBLIC university...that set the course for this university for years to come and forever changed the culture at NT to be apathetic to athletics.

In '83 NTSU went 8-4 with a conference championship including wins over New Mexico State and U. of New Mexico. That season also included a 20 point loss to the God's gift of underachievement down in Austin and a 7 point loss to the Big 8's Oklahoma State.

Bob didn't support his team because he just didn't want to. A major contributor to the problem, indeed!

Understand it to a certain extent? What's so hard to understand about showing loyalty to a school that bestowed a degree on you?

It's true that North Texas wasn't on National TV anytime during the 80's (or the 90's for that matter). They were, however, on regional TV (ABC) in 1983, when they played for the Southland Conf. championship.

Rationalizing that you weren't totally loyal to your "Alma Mater" because she wasn't on National TV, is the same as telling your long time girlfriend that you won't marry her because she never appeared in any beauty pageants. Don't think I'm just picking on you. There are MANY (too numerous to count) North Texas graduates from TEXAS that try and use the same rationalization.

By the way. If you studied music, what was wrong with CU's school of music? I believe that Glenn Miller found it satisfactory enough to attend there.

This thread represents pretty much every reason I would hate to see UNT and UTEP facing each other.

Maybe Bob wants to choose a side. I wouldn't. I think if my situation ever came about, I'd know that no matter who wins, I still win. I could only ask that both teams come out of the game with no injuries whatsoever, and that they both are in the midst of a long line of success. No matter what, I'd still cheer for both teams after the game too.

The only thing that kind of irks me about Bob here is that he probably hasn't ever even thought about UNT since he graduated, until this game? I don't know what goes on in HIS mind; I do know that in MY mind I have followed UNT since I moved away last August, and will continue to do so even when there isn't a bowl game to look back on the previous year.

You guys need to ease up on Bob. He does (in a way) represent the problem, but he also represents the solution! As our program continues to grow and be successful, alums from around the country will sit up and take notice. Some will open their wallets to support from afar. Some will become butts in seats. He represents our potential fanbase!! You might want to welcome him a little more warmly!!

There's nothing wrong with rooting for more than one school (heck, just look at my name!). I do understand the concern among many on the board for not rooting for your alma mater, but without a history of success that can happen easily. Establish some history of success, and those silent masses out there just might make themselves heard!!

---It has always seem strange to me for a alum to switch loyality...That school/university be it HS or college represents me, my past, and my education.. About the only way I would switch would be one of my family was participating for the other university (attending does not cut it) . I also suppose if I felt that school/university somehow did me wrong or became some kind of disgrace I might change loyalities. In general it really amazes me that people switch without an excellent reason..

[ SMU is an exception, they always trash UNT so let them lose ]. I guess that demonstates what I was saying...SMU has done me (UNT) wrong so to heck with them.......just keep on losing.

Would be interesting to see if people who switch school loyality, hometown loyality, etc. are more likely to switch spouces. Are they loyal to anything???/

I don't think that's bashing the school of music...I think that's just the plain truth.

As a music lover, I'm proud of our school of music. I love the fact that we produce so many world-class musicians. However, grad88 is right...however his wording leaves a little to be desired. I wouldn't call it wasted money. Any money spent on education and creating a great program is not a waste.

What I think grad88 is trying to say is that we had an administration that wouldn't put ANY money into athletics...our window to the world...while putting obscene amounts of money into a department that doesn't produce an 'advertisment' for the university outside of the local scene.
