Happens all the time in Las Vegas. Happened to the UAB basketball team at Orleans Arena in the championship game of the NIT. Yes, I’m mad and so should anyone who cares about the difference between what’s fair and what happened to the Blazers against North Texas.

They say that time doesn’t exist in Las Vegas casinos. The reason for the expression is because there are no clocks out on the floor. UAB basketball learned all about it on Thursday night in its 68-61 loss. What a complete fraud of a final score. On two different possessions late in the game, North Texas was awarded points despite committing shot clock violations. It changed the entire dynamic of the competition and gave North Texas five points that should not have counted.

If it had happened to us, I'm sure we'd never get over it either.  To be a championship team though, sometimes you have to overcome bad calls.  While they were more aggressive driving to the basket and probably deserved to be rewarded accordingly, they also racked up 3 times more free throw shots than us, which I felt was more than merited.  We overcame it though.

Jeff Goodman is a slime.  Don't forget he's the first one who broke the news about McCasland to Tech right in the middle of the NIT.  Yes, the Lubbock TV station tweeted it a few days later when they found it was official, but Goodman actually tweeted it either just before the Okie St. game or the Wisconsin game. Totally uncool thing to do to try and distract the players like that.

He's a HUGE supporter of Chris Beard, too.  

I can't stand that guy.

Those no-calls on the violations were nuts.  Rarely see one, but there were 2 in the game.

Yeah we'd be crying, too, if it were us but I'll point out two truths: 

Getting those calls right doesn't guarantee the outcome would be any different.
I feel like them getting 3x as many FT attempts was a much bigger obstacle for us to overcome than UAB trying to overcome a couple of bonus possessions by UNT offense.

...I'd feel the same way about those even if we were on the losing side.

I will say this, his closing comments are totally on point: this is an opportunity for the NCAA to fix some rules.

Just seems like a dramatic way to go about saying that.

But the announcers said this was a veteran ref crew, that we were lucky to have such great refs at the NIT in Vegas, both games!  Lol

The thing is, on both of those possessions our baskets were second chance points following offensive rebounds. If UAB fans want to be mad, they should be mad their team couldn't get two defensive rebounds and then couldn't defend two shot attempts. They should also be mad their team missed 7 free throws (wild considering our guys only had 11 total FT attempts).

It seems to me that's an easy fix.  Have a horn sound when the shot clock goes to zero.  Then all the ref has to do is look to see if the shooter released the ball before the horn sounded.  To me, basketball is the hardest game to officiate.  In another vein, has travelling been eliminated as a violation?
