I think first sunbelt championship win is 3

#1) West Texas State in 1976. The school was independent with just a handful of NCAA bids available; that never went to an independent)  The victory, in front of 9,000+ in the Super Pit, solidified NTSU as the #1 Team in Texas and the Best Team ever; unbelievable talent with roster full of Hall of Famers and/or guys that should have been. At one point, 17th in the nation ranking. Greatest collection of coaches. No ESPN, Hudl or star system. One of the highest scoring teams in the nation with legit 1st Team All-State Roster and Juco All-Americans.

Congratulations to the McCasland era.  Carry on.

My Mom, who I gather is roughly your age because she wrote for the Daily in the mid to late 70s, called last night and said it was bigger than anything when she was in school and knew Coach Blakeley was smiling.  The NIT did after all invite independents back then and we didn't get the call (Mom was in his office when he found out neither tourney invited us...he was not happy)

Now was the 70s team better than anything Mac has had? Sure, probably so - though given FAU's run, perhaps not.

Post season wins tend to trump regular season ones though (no matter how big) because they get remembered in the books.  There's no wikipedia page for the West Texas win.  An NIT title would live forever.

Coach Blakeley would definitely be smiling, that makes even Johnny proud

It’s nice that Sports Reference shows our SRS (Simple Rating System) score of our teams throughout the years. It’s just a standard rating based on strength of schedule that season and point differential. Helps quantify where each team stood relative to the rest of D1 men’s college basketball each year.

Our SRS each of the past four seasons has set a new program high. It’s also interesting that the highest marks before Mccasland were set by Spika’s MVC teams, not Blakeley’s teams. It also shows the Strength of Schedule which was much higher in the MVC in the 60s than it was those elite Blakeley years.

It’s not exact because it does seem to overweight strength of schedule, but it’s still cool to see something showing Mccasland’s consistent ability to propel our program to new heights.
