NT Bowl game appearances, trivia

How many more bowl games would North Texas have appeared in if 6 wins always meant you got a bid? (Throughout history)

How many more,  if winning 5 games got us in? (For those teams that only played a  9 or 10 game season.

Would any team in the past would have gone to a bowl if not for having to go the playoffs route?

Would Mason Fine, Derek Thompson, Austin Aune and others be in any conversation of “Best Ever” if they played in the 70’s; where QB’s didn’t pass more than 20 or 25 times max per game?  Or, if they had  2 Running Backs in the backfield. Or, only 2 receivers? Or, when they took every snap from under center? Or, if their 6 or 7 game season didn’t take them anywhere?

Just curious

A lot.  I'll guess 30 more with 6 wins, 50 more with 5 wins.  But that assumes the amount of bowl games existed then as they do today.

Not too far back, with a lot fewer bowls, most were tied to conference winners, and only a few had at-large spots.  Bowls with at-large openings would send bowl reps to potential school's final games to judge quality of a team and fan support for a bowl.

# of Bowl games:

2022 =43

1997 =20

1980 = 15

There were no bowl appearances from my time at NT, 67-70.  They would have gone all 3 years with their record today.

Just for fun, Steve Ramsey playing in 10 games in 1969.  Throw for 2828  yards and 24 tds. Those numbers on a per-game basic are almost identical to Fine's best year were Ramsey passed for 6 yards less a game; but had 2/10 more passing tds per game.

Your assumption that there was a lot less passing in the late 60's and 70's is not valid.  That is when the passing attacks begin to dominate the offenses.

The number is roughly the same as the number of super models that I would have slept with if they were willing to sleep with anybody.  It's also just about as meaningful of a question since the same can bowl analysis can be applied to every team in the country.

For the record, this is the worst trivia question of all time
