I have often said that while UTSA may officially stand for “The University of Texas at San Antonio,” our institutional mission is to be The University of Texas for San Antonio. From our fields and courts to our classrooms and laboratories, UTSA is dedicated to transforming the lives of our students and lifting up the San Antonio community.   But that profound bond goes both ways, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t take the opportunity to thank the San Antonio community for the outstanding support it has given to UTSA and to our football team.   A renewed buzz around Roadrunners Football ignited last season as head coach Jeff Traylor and our tremendous student-athletes stacked one win upon another on a journey to the program’s first conference championship. You could feel the excitement on campus. You could see the excitement at the tailgates. And you could certainly hear the excitement inside the Alamodome, as our fans loudly let their presence be known—much to the chagrin of fantastic conference foes like UAB and Western Kentucky.   That fervor for UTSA Football has only grown in 2022. We’ve seen a 38% increase in student attendance from last season to this one, and a 46% increase in season ticket sales. As a result, UTSA currently ranks No. 1 in game attendance in Conference USA. For perspective, our current average attendance would rank No. 5 out of 14 institutions who will call the American Athletic Conference home starting next year.   We’re always working to find innovative ways to increase engagement between UTSA Athletics and the Alamo City because we’ve seen how powerful that connection can be. Our teams bring the community together and make life just a little bit sweeter in the 210.   When the Alamodome is packed, it overflows with an energy that rivals just about any other college football environment in the nation—from Conference USA, the AAC or even the Power Five conferences. It’s no coincidence that our Roadrunners boast a 14-2 record in home games since Coach Traylor arrived in San Antonio. The team feeds off the tremendous energy from the crowd and Roadrunner pride jolting through the stadium. These forces are powering UTSA Football closer to another conference championship in 2022.   We couldn’t do this without the support of San Antonio. We couldn’t do this without the support of our students. We couldn’t do this without the support of our alumni. We couldn’t do this without the support of every Roadrunner fan who instinctively shouts “SA!” every time someone within earshot says, “UT.”   Thank you, sincerely, for showing up with your “Birds Up.”   We need your help again this weekend as we look to #PackTheDome for Saturday’s Homecoming game against the University of North Texas. Considering their recent success, the Alamodome hasn't exactly been packed this year. They only had 22K at their last two home games.

Yes, 25k vs SMU.

 

To make it a more fair comparision, we averaged 23k the year we were conference favorites. 29k v SMU, 30k v LaTech, and 25k v Rice. UTSA football interest kinda low considering their expectations

And considering the Alamodome is in the heart of San Antonio. While Denton is technically part of DFW, it's on the far outskirts with 2 other D1 college programs in Dallas and Fort Worth. If anybody wants to watch D1 football in San Antonio, UTSA is the only place to get it. I'd say 22k in attendance is bad considering their situation.

If we stopped getting blown out of games at the beginning of the season would help towards our attendance numbers.

Might be better to talk about UTSA metrics in comparison to UTEP.  No other football in the city.  Massive stadium. etc

I suspect if UTEP was enjoying the same success as UTSA in 2021 and 2022, they'd be averaging over 40K.

On one hand I think this message is great for them! Highlights the percentage growth in attendance.  On the other, I am shocked to read that they only had 22K in the last two games, if true?

Absolutely true on UTEP. When they are good, that place turns out for the Miners. Great stadium and strong citizen pride in the Miners when they are good. The problem is that is very, very infrequent. Last time I remember them being good, they got ranked under Mike Price. Maybe about 15-20 years ago?

Yes much more reasonable comparison. Looking at the first game of the year, UTEP had nearly 46k for UNT while UTSA had 37.5k hosting a top 25 Houston and coming off a 12 win season themselves. There just does not appear to be a ton of support for UTSA in their city.

It probably is worth noting the substantial difference in the pool of potential people from said city that can be drawn from, if you're going to compare San Antonio to Denton and make it a city thing.

Not completely accurate, but it is true they do not have any major league franchise.  Obviously SA has the Spurs.
