Realignments likely to cut football paydays for smaller schools

Football teams representing schools like Middle Tennessee State that in the past have cashed in on big paydays by scheduling games against the likes of Oklahoma and Alabama may find that scheduling more difficult in the future.

“The obvious reason (for scheduling games against such powerhouse teams) is financially it’s a good payday,” Middle Tennessee State coach Rick Stockstill said.

But with the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten both set to expand to at least 16 teams over the next few seasons, and other Power Five leagues going through their own transitions, there could be fewer openings for games against smaller, non-conference opponents.

The potential for some teams to be left even further from the pay and limelight has met with some pushback.

“I’d hate for those (games) to go away, because I think to keep college football going and keep it where it is … that level’s important too,” Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi said. “I think it depends on how many teams are in these conferences. … That’s way down the road, I guess.”

Of the 60 teams in the so-called “Group of Five” leagues – Conference USA and the American, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt conferences – only Florida International University and North Texas aren’t scheduled to play a Power Five team during the coming season. Twenty-six G5 teams are scheduled to play multiple P5 opponents. For example, Kent State is slated to play three: Washington, Oklahoma and defending national champion Georgia.

Interesting that FIU and North Texas are the only G5s without P5s on their schedules.

Maybe just a fluke this year with zero P5s, but North Texas has generally avoided the "body bag" schedules of the past in recent years.

But isn't UNT a more affluent G5 school than many other G5's? The two P5 land grant institutions in Texas make UNT finances pale by comparison for sure, but UNT looks to be doing well (resources, stadium, practice facilities, huge enrollment! etc.). So North Texas doesn't need to schedule a lot of Bama, OU and Texas games for the $$.

The AD has really focused on only doing one-for-one future series with P5s.  Next year we have a return home game with Cal.  In future seasons home and home with Texas Tech, Baylor, Missouri, and Colorado.
