Scrimmage thoughts?

Good grief.  It is early.  They are getting use to different quarterbacks with different cadences.  Give them more repetitions before you write them off.

I mean, their first game is in 3 weeks so things need to tighten up a bit. I don't think anybody is writing them off. Just expressing concern about a pre-existing issue. If that's an issue during scrimmage, what will it be in a packed house in El Paso?

First off, he has the tangibles as far as build.  Second, his ball seemed to get out on time and he was hitting receivers where they are most comfortable making the catch.  A lot was made last year about “drops” by receivers, but a part of that is the body position a receiver us in when he’s asked to make a catch.  Last, after big plays he was going around to everyone on the offense, patting o-linemen on the head and celebrating with skill players (and this was on running touchdowns).

I envision a scenario much like Masons freshman year. Aune starts the first game, but if the team is sputtering, enter Gunnell and then ride that horse all the way to the AAC!

I know how to do it on the message board, but I wasn’t sure if posting a video is frowned upon on the actual message board.  I don’t know the rules for that stuff.

ETA:  It’s not an exciting video, just something I think @KeithLee would want to see.

I have one video that your boy is in, but I don’t know the rules of putting a video on here. I tried messaging you, but couldn’t figure out how to attach it.

Thanks. He is gonna send me his catches. He said he had a good day.

I thought Aune looked okay today. None of the other QBs did anything to unseat him. Gunnell did throw a nice pass to Neville for a TD. Tom Treib is gonna be a treat to watch this season. He showed some good awareness & speed after picking off an Aune pass and taking it 30 yards to the house. RBs are deep, each one showed flashes even the true freshman Farrar.

Walerius came up in the stands & asked not to video the scrimmage.

Besides not getting to see the practice because I got there at 11:15 and not 10:15, it was the best set up and best attended one I've been to.  The only other issue we had is they kept running out of pizza and you had to be close when the new pizza showed up or you'd miss it.  I was shocked at the attendance because of the lack of interest/excitement I thought surrounded this season.

    • You mean like all of the bowl games that we lost with Fine at QB? Three of the FIU games where we got our butts kicked. That La Tech game we lost after going undefeated leading into the game and blowing it in front of probably the largest crowd of the year......or for a long time. Going 4-8 in 2019....losing the last three games of that year.   I could go on and on.  Sorry Phil. But when we played teams with outstanding defenses, we almost always lost......even when running up good passing stats.  Proportionally, we brought in just as many fans when we were having good years in 1-AA. In fact our first sell-out EVER at Fouts was against SFA in the late 80's. According to the people who regularly sneer at our 1-AA days they didn't care that we were 1-AA. Someone promoted the game to them and they came in (proportionately) record numbers.
    • IMG_0977.mov     My 7 year old had an absolute blast last night!  He’s a scrappy squad member and the pregame festivities were great for him. The march, the on field, bounce houses, etc. The in game experience was really good, too. The fan cam, the shirt toss, the pyrotechnics, etc. He said to me, “Man, North Texas has really stepped up its game.”  😂 Drone show was fantastic!  Just a good night. I believe any first time attendees last night will be coming back for second game.   Maclin also gave him a high 5, but I couldn’t pull my phone out fast enough for that pic.
    • I hope he gets out there and wrecks shop.
    • Solid? We are a long way from solid. Middle of the pack is solid. We are the worst in the FBS. At this point we just want a defense that isn't a complete embarrassment. We brought back a large portion of our production from last season's C-USA Championship Game team. The same team that came within 3 points of beating Boise State in the Fresco Bowl. There is no logical reason to make excuses for being the worst defense in all of the FBS. If we lack the talent to field a respectable defense, than that is on Morris and Caponi. They had the offseason and the portal to go out and get the players they needed. There are no magical excuses that change those facts. You can't have it both ways. You can't say he needs to have his personnel in place, and ignore the fact that he chose not to bring in the players when he could have got them.
    • They very well could.  The stack is notoriously not good vs the run. When you don't have the players to execute it, it can become historically bad. I tried to voice this back in the summer. I was told by several posters here that it would be fine. Well, I guess fine is a relative word...
