Jalie has done much better than Tina and Tina got in so there’s that.  I feel like the committee needs to decide how inclusive they want us to be.

much better?  FYI, Tina had a 5+ year run that was better than what Jalie has done.  But I know that gets lost behind all those < ten-win seasons.

I feel like Jalie should get tons of credit for our first WNIT (*EDIT for correction: it was the WBI in 2019*) win, but after that, I don't know how you figure it's "much better".

This program has had 3 twenty-win seasons in its history, and two of them were under Slinker.  Jalie hasn't gotten there yet.

For all of youngsters I've been watching NORTH TEXAS athletics for 55 years and Rick V brought so much to the school as far    as upgrading facilities, tailgating, and student involvement since Hayden was here. As far his hires Dodge and the idiot women's basketball coach was sort of forced on him by Batille(sp), Jones  was a home run. All the above being said Wren is taking it to the next level, but Rick got it rolling in the right direction. Yes I vote for him HOF. There I've vented

shanice stephens or mike peterson? cause they both sucked

When did Mitchell get a NIT win?

NT was 17-13 (10-7) last year

I thought that NT signing her through 27-28 was a monumental error.  I don't see NT buying out a WBB coach and specially not an NT icon like Mitchell, so her record no matter how bad will not get her fired.

I believe that Mitchell recruits well, but thus far as failed to put it all together on the court.

She is bringing in what looks like a great class of guards next year.  I hope she can add a big or two to the mix.

Hopefully next year will be the long awaited upturn, but I would not bet any money on it.

@GrandGreen I mistyped.  It was the WBI (2019).

Mitchell is the only coach in NT WBB history to have a post season win beyond the conference tournament.  They advanced to the WBI title game (beating UT-RGV, Utah St, and North Alabama), losing to App State in the final.

Is this the same board that flew a banner to get RV fired a few years ago?

Man, are we schizophrenic.

To be fair,
I thought that banner was stupid.

Also, that thread is fun reading if you have a lot of free time and have mentally prepared yourself for the a**whipping UNT90 used to be.

Fun reading indeed. The teenage girl giddiness when it hits Twitter is hilarious.

For what?

Setting our program back years?

I am sure some of the olds on here won't agree. He is one of the main reasons people from the classes of 2006-2011 don't want to have anything to do with the athletic department. I have so many classmates that were embarrassed to support the teams because they were so terrible.

Yes, the basketball team had some success and it was awesome. The football teams were pathetic during those years.

He helped get Apogee built, but other than that what exactly did he do?

Seriously, can my dad get in, or some of the vendors? Maybe every year we can induct a random person from the stands at homecoming into our HOF.

Maybe we should start putting in long time season ticket holders?  If someone is a fan for a long time, and has season tickets for a long time, They're contributing to the long term success of the program.  Could also be a way to increase season ticket sales.

Apogee Stadium should be enough to earn the HOF.  That was strictly his contribution.  As a matter of fact the entire sports village across the Interstate was RV's as well (except for baseball/softball fields and the new soccer/track and field stadium).

I don't think much credit is due Mitchell for getting into the WBI tournament.  NT had an 18-16 record that year and the WBI was a tournament for teams that didn't get into the NCAA or NIT.

The late DR. Pohl played a major role in making all of that come to fruition.

And let’s not forget Derek who rallied the students. He also played a major role.

Without their persistence and vision RV would not have been able to make it happen.

Don’t forget Todd Dodge had a big impact in helping fundraise for that stadium too.

Think who who he succeeded. Craig Helwig. Need I say more? RV was certainly an upgrade. Hell,  he actually gave a crap about NT. Helwig, not so much.

Here is all we got from Helwig (trying to add UT burnt orange to our logos):

I honestly think time will be kind to RV's legacy at UNT. Unfortunately, the last few years of Dodge, how McCarney ended, and dare I say Benford just are tough to swallow. Moving down the road a few years, and looking at what happened under his watch, I honestly think he made athletics at UNT better, even though he didn't have the administrative support that athletics has currently.

No doubt about it as far as Rick Villarreal
& the  UNTHOF is concerned.  Give him a Purple Heart, too, for all the novices he had to put up with of which I include myself.

••• We did need Apogee to seat more for the future, though, as UH built a 40K seat stadium & now SMU who will soon be expanding GJ Ford, but RV sacrificed some seating capacity back then to get a few more amenities for Apogee Stadium.
•••  Remember when RV took a retired Big 8 commissioner on a tour of the MG Village & how he was blown away that Apogee only cost UNT $78 million?
••• More seating for Apogee will come if the NCAA Rules Committee will get their heads out of the darkest crevices of their torsos & allow the G5 venues arms race to legitimately continue.

I vote hell no on this. We had to accept mediocrity for too many years while RV was kept in the AD job and I don't want to be celebrating it just six years later.

Ask again in 20 years.

Here's what I don't get and maybe you can explain it better.  Looking at the list of most recent HOF recipients, I see Tina Slinker listed as basketball coach.  It says she was here for 19 seasons but only had 6 winning seasons?  But RV got the stadium built and he doesn't get his shot?  Please help me understand your methodology.
