They just saw where Will Wade is available and they like his style.  Say he would fit in real nice with the culture over on the hilltop, hence the talk of discarding Jank.

Typical SMU fan wanting a douche in their program. Now I agree Jank isn’t great, and probably held them back from getting an at large a few times, Will Wade isn’t getting a job for at least 3 years.

Apparently, some SMU fans are unhappy with Coach J. Including criticism for his non-conference scheduling. Isn't that one reason Helwig released him as our coach. Of course, Helwig subsequently hired Trilli who lost to Maryland by 70 points.

Trilli was 20-87 at North Texas.  Similar to Benford, he could recruit but couldn't coach.   I didn't realize Trilli was under investigation by the NCAA at UT for giving loans to players as an assistant in 1991 under Tom Penders, before coming to NT.

Of course Helwig was a UT lover too.   He went back there after leaving NT.  He tried to put UT orange in our logos when he changed them.

Jank is an honest and nice person and, like Sonny Dykes, doesn't fit the SMU mold. Jank is an excellent teacher of fundamentals and a very good game coach. What he lacks is the "sleeze factor" in recruiting that SMU fans demand from their coaches.

Jank got an extremely raw deal at North Texas. He was winning pretty consistently but our UT grad AD Craig Helwig, intervened, hired UT's top recruiter Vic Trilli, and the rest is history, very sad history.

Helwig wanted to pay bills and so he wanted to whore out the basketball team the way they were whoring out football. Jank looked at what he wanted to do and said, "adios". Trilli got hired, and in his infinitely positive fashion, said this is how we did it at Texas when Penders got hired, playing road games against big names. Problem was that UT had money and pull in the state--we had neither.
