“One of the schools in the SEC West said $50K,” Greene told 247Sports.

Asked what sort of deal that was for, Greene grinned and said: “I just had to be an athlete, stay eligible and play football.”

Welcome to the largely unexplored world of NIL, where 2022 recruits have been the ultimate Guinea Pigs. Not only do 50 states have 50 different sets of NIL rules, but institutions within each state have diverse readings on what is allowed and what isn’t.

This has created a muddled landscape in which administrators, donors, coaches and recruits are learning what’s possible and what isn’t on the fly. The chaotic nature of the unknown has created some eye-opening headlines – 50K for pancakes anybody? – but it’s also somewhat twisted the narrative away from reality in terms of the impact NIL has on recruiting.

While at the All-American Bowl, 247Sports surveyed 87 players anonymously on whether name, image and likeness played a role in their recruitment. Only 16 of 87 players (18.3%) said yes.
