College football’s biggest threat is the continued regionalization of success and interest in the sport

It appears that the rich will continue to get richer and basically openly recruit anyone they think they can get to transfer in.  G5 hits on a player that was underrated and he comes in a lights it up will be the target of the moneyed programs.

Further reinforces hiring a great coach. If you can play doesn’t matter where you go to school. If you hit the transfer portal it’s for a reason.

Completely disagree that the portal and NIL are turning people away. What does a casual fan (which drives viewership) care about who is transferring and who is getting an NIL deal? SEC spends money on coaching, the other conferences do not and it’s shows on the field.

What it has to do with for the casual fan: It is the casual fan who doesn't know anyone on a G5 team anymore after maybe watching two games last season, because all the stars left for Power 5 teams. Even (particularly) casual fans need some recognizable faces).

Secondly: Yes, casual fans outnumber hard core fans. But do not underestimate what the mood of the hardcore fans does to drive casual fans. An important subset of casual fans also know and get drawn in by the passion of the hard core fans out there. This is particularly true for college, where casual fans and hardcore fans went to university together and very often know each other. If the hard core fans stop caring as much and bringing it up in conversation you also lose an important subset of the casual fans. And those in turn then do not talk to other casual fans about it. It snowballs. Somebody has to care enough to tell the barman to put the game on tv rather than whatever else is on at the same time.

I would rather say it further reinforces the idea that in the new world how much you pay your coach may be less important than how much you pay your players. SL and NT would be a lot more successful next year if NTs boosters had put half a million of his salary into NIL for the players.
