SI: Sources: C-USA Asks AAC to Consider a Reorganizing of Both Conferences

What still throws a wrench in everything is the status of the B12. They will add more teams. Could they still lose teams? I guarantee Memphis, USF, and SMU are in constant contact with the B12.

Todays Speculation (sure to be wrong)

  • If the B12 would go ahead and make it's moves and takes 2 more AAC teams the "mergers" between CUSA-AAC-Belt would follow in line quickly
  • If the B12 takes a couple of MWC teams it opens up good chances for UNT-UTSA to the MWC
  • These "talks" might force the MWC to be proactive - this could be good for UNT. If the MWC sits back and merger talks move forward and then they lose a team or 2 they could be in a tough place
  • If all hell breaks loose and the B12 looses 2-4 more teams then you probably see a combination of teams across several conferences with a complete shakeup

It certainly makes the ground shaky on both the AAC and probably less so but still some at MWC.  I tend to think your 3rd bullet point is right; the MWC and AAC both may want to backfill prior to the B12 expansion and that could bode well for us.  The AAC could lock up another strong program or two in Texas and force the Mountain West to pick up the scraps.

I think something that might help us is there are honestly no programs in CUSA or the Belt that come close, at least presently. to what the AAC is losing. The "star" programs in the MWC seem like they would rather hold off for a P5 invite. I think people are putting a lot more emphasis on football than these conference might be. They cannot be thinking short-term. They needs to look at the overall developments within athletic departments over the past 6+ years and where is honestly looks like they are headed. If you adding based on "hot" teams look at programs like Costal, Louisiana, and UTSA. You have to think what happens if their current HC leaves? What is their infrastructure and are they progressing.  If the presidents are making additions based on "rah-rah" and not sound business plans then they are not doing their jobs.

Just curious.  The MWC has not lost any teams and is renegotiating a new TV deal soon. Negotiations may start in 2022 and be concluded by 2024 when the current deal expires.   Most MWC fans think we will see a modest increase in TV money in the next deal as long as the conference remains intact.  (looking at Boise).   Why do so many post the MWC TV deal will go down?     We have no clue what additions would do with riders and clauses in the contract though.  Boise would like to move to the West and the Front range schools, mostly Air Force and CSU, would like more schools in Mountain and Central time zones.
