Add Texas State to the future non-conference opponent list. Home and home in 2026 and 2030.

It's been 7+ years since our program last went to Austin.  Do you not like Austin? IMO San Marcos is like Denton with some South Texas vibes, minus the gameday blowouts.  Unless it's changed.

This is how you should know its a great idea...

I like the game. Might as well make a conference out of Texas University's and attempt to market it as such as a league for marketing and recruiting purposes.

UNT

SMU

UH

TTECH

UTSA

TX STATE

RICE

UTEP

TCU

Baylor

Where do I sign?

You'd be smart to sign in blood if offered a setup even half this good...

🗣 O—M—G! (again)?
First, hoping Wren Baker is a bonafide keeper because he’ll do a helluva lot more good at North Texas than the alternative & once all this NCAA—UT/OU fruit basket turnover smoke clears he’ll get a good OOC scheduling formula going at North Texas. Seems he’s not too far from doing that already.

••• STILL.....Scheduling up is the only way to go up & that is what will catch the imagination of countless North Texas alums & fans many of whom are still —Missing In Action.
We won’t get Top 25 rankings or votes playing former Lone Star Conference schools.  Sorry, it’s true.
TSU-San Marcos may cause “it” to happen for some of you because you can drive there(?)😳but it won’t do anything for all the UNT-affiliated ones whose seats still remain empty 10 years after Apogee Stadium’s debut.  They expect better before they hop aboard.

Nevertheless, a 2 games series with TSU-SM will not cause irreparable harm only if they beat us, but why put yourself in such a position for that to happen in the first place?

👀HAVE WE ALREADY FORGOTTEN?
Is the Big 10’s Indiana U still the only P5 school to play at Apogee?😞 Then look at all the impressive list of P5 schools UNT played at Fouts Field & then start working for a future OOC schedule from that list.

Remember when we beat the PAC12 Oregon State Beavers at Fouts Field?
A Big 12 Baylor win by the Mean Green with it being 105 degrees at kick-off?
A  near win over Bobby Bowden’s Florida State Seminoles with a snow filled Fouts Field?

I’ll be the first to say I’d love to play a P5 any day here in Denton. But if we can’t, then this is a fine opponent that is much better than FCS spares of South Alabama, who will bring tens of people and nobody from DFW cares a thing about them.

Using your logic for Wisconsin and other P5 teams, why should they play little old UNT?

Just speculating (like most on GMG do) but Wisconsin may have glanced at our scheduling history?   For instance, we were playing Texas in the mid-1970’s when no one else in the Southland, Sun Belt & most of the present Conference-USA couldn’t even spell  L-O-N-G-H-O-R-N-S, least of all scheduled them back then.  That initial 4 game schedule with UT happened because of Hayden Fry’s  friendship with Darrell K. Royal.
No doubt there is a scheduling pecking order in Texas & UNT is about in the middle of it, but I don’t think it helps us to schedule & play schools below that middle part when you’re trying to build a positive perception with the fans & alums that UNT is trying to get out to Apogee on Game Day.

Ha! No, I didn't know what you were saying: does untjim1995 think "we are already playing a game in Austin, so why play in San Marcos"
...we aren't playing in Austin.  It's been nearly a decade.

So, either untjim1995 has lost his sense of time, or he just doesn't ever want to play in anything south Texas.

excited for this series, i just thought the first game would be at apogee... kind of weird to be the return game between these two schools.

I didn't care too much in this specific case, but after looking at our future schedule it is VERY odd how we get stuck with the return game in almost every home and home we sign. These are the schools we're getting the return game with...

-Liberty, California, UNLV, Texas Tech, Memphis, Wyoming, Baylor, Texas State, Tulane, Colorado, South Alabama

The only series we get home first coming up is Army in 2028 with the return game at West Point in 2029.

So I guess this means our SMU series is finished....

2026

@ Wyoming

UNLV

@ Texas State

Houston Baptist

There are no openings left to continue the SMU series. Does Wren have us in the same conference by 2026?

We have at least 1 opening every year after 2026 and SMU has hardly anything scheduled past 2024. There is certainly room to continue the series if both schools want.

Been to San Marcos recently and first time in probably a decade, and not long enough to really rate the city.  However, didn't get that old vibe of the fun city that I remember.

As for Austin, it used to be my favorite Texas City, but now it is just another big city.  Use to love Barton Springs, Schultz Beer Garden and sixth street before it became a thing.

As much as I'm driven crazy by the was CFB schedules games a decade in advance, a look at the non-conference slate on the horizon appears to show a focus on at least one

  • Drivable away game
  • Feature home game
  • FCS opponent

Don’t like the fact we play 0 P5 teams in 2026, but Wyoming would be a fantastic trip.

You can’t play people who won’t sign a contract.

I can link eleventy billion we need to play Texas teams posts here. Your AD delivered.

Your neighbor SMU traveled to San Marcos and caught a break to win.

The reality is not only are home games getting harder to find from the richer programs, they are less willing to pay a lot for those games.

NMSU sits in no man’s land in large part because both New Mexico and UTEP understand that if the Aggies join them that’s a non-conference game to replace when few schools like to travel.

263 miles to San Marcos there is exactly one G5 opponent within 263 miles of AState and while AAC is demonstrably the best G5 league Memphis goes home and home over multi year deals because games are getting harder to find

It was more in line that the biggest idiot on the board thinks it’s a bad idea to play Texas State in San Marcos…that tells me it’s a great idea

I’d rather play ASU & U of Louisiana home & homes than former Lone Star Conference or SLC Texas schools (albeit we were once in the SLC ourselves).

IMO, none of us at our level can really afford to topload our schedules with each other because we start choking out Top 25 vote opportunities for our respective schools.  ••• In other words look who our group has to play (& beat) to get Top 25 votes as it is?

2 Ranked Teams:

(1)? If Liberty U comes to Apogee this October & is still ranked that will be the 2’nd ranked FBS school my age group would have seen in Denton.

(2) A 1974 UNT Mean Greem beat a 19’th ranked San Diego State Aztecs at the late, great Fouts Field.  (The flying worm creator one late Rick Spears told me the Aztecs head football coach kicked & knocked the water cooler off the wall at their dressing room after their upset loss to the Mean Green. “AD” Hayden Fry sent him a bill for damages. Never heard if SDSU ever paid it.

Thats it...

Meanwhile, post UNT’s Missouri Valley Conference membership & Fry leaving for Iowa, afterwards we just kept maintaining a continuous malaise of non-stop passiveness with too few bright spots that would ever build a fan base.   We would never be ready for jumping up a step conference-wise during re-alignment time unless SMU disappeared in Texas’ biggest sink hole ever.

Arky State, Texas State, ULL, and Troy are regional opponents I'd be glad to play in OOC games. I do wonder if SMU will keep playing us after 2025 or if they are moving on from us...it really would not surprise me if they do abandon us.

Still think BYU would be the best OOC team we could ever schedule for a game in Denton, but they seem to appear on everyone else's schedule but ours. But I like the teams we have set up home-and-home series with for the next several years.

I was just in Las Vegas and drove by the Raider stadium.  Nice looking stadium from the outside.  I plan on going out for the game next year.   The stadium parking for the NFL games is $100 and there is not a lot of it.   What I was told you can park at the Casino garages for $25 and walk over but it is a long walk.  I am excited for the game.  Put a little money down on the Mean Green and walk across the street and watch us win.

You live in Vegas?  Yes I’ve heard that the stadium is fantastic and has really helped UNLV recruiting as well.
