SMU mentioned as option in Big 12 3.0

If Texas and Oklahoma officially make plans to leave, the strongest move the Big 12 could make is aggressively going after the top layer of the Group of Five, with a special focus on tying together a strong geographic league. Houston should be a first call, like it should have been last time. SMU should come. BYU, Memphis, UCF, Cincinnati, Appalachian State, Louisiana, Boise State should all be considered.

Pick four of the schools, whichever ones make sense competitively, geographically and culturally. All of the schools I mentioned have perennially been in the top 25 discussion, both in football and basketball. While nothing will make up for the vacuum at the top of the league, it immediately would make the Big 12 a deep league filled with great programs.

Let’s say for argument’s sake that the new league takes SMU, Houston, UCF and Memphis. The league would have a handful of conference championships and New Year’s Six bowl wins to its name, along with a solid geographic footprint and some fast-growing brands. Mix that with what Baylor, Iowa State, TCU and several others have done over the past few years and you have a very exciting football league.

Why, HG?  When SMU first entered CUSA they were sucking hind teat as a football program.

And beat our ass (except one year) ever since. I admire your eternal optimism Plumm.. but we aren’t anywhere near where those green koolaid goggles make us seem.

Because we need to win high profile OOC games to bolster our standing. Beating them would give us a little cred.

Could happen...

Although there is relatively no chance of the Big 12 taking both, it's almost certain that they will add either SMU or Houston.

But, then again, the consensus of all the knowledgeable pundits on the AAC message board is that the remaining Big 12 teams are going to quickly come running to the safety of the American Athletic Conference.

That too could happen...

but probably won't.

Seriously, SMU ain’t gonna fill the shoes of UT and OU. If the Big 12 doesn’t fold you’ll see a UCF type join.

However, now that paying players is legal they might be in good shape. If killing hookers isn’t frowned upon then they will be unstoppable.

I would think the first 4 choices (in some order)
BYU-UCF-CINCINNATTI-UH

Could the B12 try and go to 16? Add the four above plus maybe SF-MEMPHIS-SMU

So your saying we should not expect any SMU players to get NIL agreements with escort services?

I think UH & the H-town market is a natural even for an extremely weakened Big 12.

Iowa State AD said few short years ago that the Big 12 w/o OU & UT is.......D-E-A-D.
