North Texas Mean Green Draft Prospects

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers chose receiver Jaelon Darden in Round 4 of the 2021 NFL Draft, it was the first time in 32 years a UNT player broke into the top 130 selections. On the contrary, it’s unlikely any player from the program is selected in the NFL Draft come 2022.

Jyaire Shorter, WR | Grade: 3.38 | Projected Round: 6th

Wide receiver Jyaire Shorter showed a lot of potential in 2019 but played in just two games last season and finished with 4 receptions. Shorter is a big-bodied, sure-handed receiver with reliable hands. I graded Shorter as a sixth-round prospect off the 2019 film, but the fourth-year junior needs a big year and must get his game back on track.

Dion Novil, DL | Grade: 3.05 | Projected Round: FA

Dion Novil is an explosive 3-technique tackle who showed great potential in 2019 then watched his game level off last year. He possesses a great first step off the snap and a burst of closing speed. That being the case, Novil shows limited strength in his game, gets handled by blocks, and really doesn’t play like a 310-pound defensive lineman.

There was not a single spot on our defense that was good last year.  Our inside LB's were okay when they were healthy, but that was not often.  Every other part of the defense was terrible and that includes the DL.  We wouldn't get any pressure, man cover, or stop the run.  Our scheme was better than the year before where we had safeties responsible for A gap, but it still was not good.

Maybe we could only give up 28 a game this year and win 6?

Not sure why Shorter is there. He’s a RS Sophomore still. Not sure I’ve seen someone as a sophomore declare early, but Covid technically makes him a junior. He would need to have an amazing year

Redshirt Sophomores can declare for the draft. Basically after 3 years you can declare

Maybe we should get them to also rank our Mean Green Village venues as compared to the “bloody” rest of CUSA along with most of the G”freakin’5” (& even some P5’s,  too) or maybe—we’d just finish too high for that poll?🤢

••• IT’S BEEN ONE HELLUVA’ WACKY YEAR FOR A PANDEMIC!🤪  Those who do most G5 college football magazine coverage or polls don’t seem to know how much our team has changed since last Fall because of the portal transfers blitz that has taken place in Denton since the Winter/Spring of 2021.  I think we fared quite well truth be told.
••• Even some posters on GMG have yet to factor in all those new “P5-heavily recruited“ additions, either.

••• Some on GMG are even agreeing with a new Yahoo “how many wins in 2021” poll with almost giddy glee (it seems).  I’d bet much of that group also said Mason Fine would never start at North Texas, either.

Because he's a big bodied kid who can absolutely fly on the stopwatch. The potential is off the charts, and he would really help himself by pulling the game together, and developing some polish & finesse.

UAB is already touting their new stadium as “best in CUSA” (hey! it’s new for heaven’s sake) BUT.......what they forget to say is that it’s located 3 miles from their campus (about 10+ minutes with traffic) & that they’ll be sharing the city (or county) owned stadium with a SWAC(?) school & a SWAC bowl game.
So Apogee Stadium is still (arguably) the best CUSA “on-campus” Stadium & Wren Baker will enhance it with what I think he will do with an End Zone facility as tied to the present Athletic Center.  That might be a 2 phase project, but that’s what I think will happen.
