Projecting the best WR Corps in every major conference

Top Challenger: North Texas Mean Green

North Texas has ranked either first or second in Conference USA in passing yards per game in each of the past four seasons. Replacing Darden's 1,190 yards and 19 touchdowns from last season alone won't be easy, but the combo of Jyaire Shorter and Deonte Simpson will at least give the Mean Green a chance. Shorter missed most of last season, but he has averaged slightly better than 20 yards per reception in his career and had nine touchdowns in 2019. Simpson went for 20.7 yards per catch in 2020 as one of the top deep threats in the league.

Keep an Eye on: SMU Mustangs

SMU has three returning receivers who amassed at least 400 yards last season, most notably Reggie Roberson Jr., who had 474 yards in the team's first four games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. The Mustangs also bring in former Oklahoma tight end Grant Calcaterra, which should help soften the blow of losing Kylen Granson (1,257 receiving yards, 14 touchdowns over the past two seasons) to the NFL draft. He'll be reunited with fellow Oklahoma transfer Tanner Mordecai, who is (presumably) finally going to get his shot as a starting quarterback.

I'd put ours over UTSA 10 times out of 10, even with the loss of JD. Shorter may be the biggest physical freak at WR in the league with the size & straight-line speed combo. Simpson is only getting better, and should be extremely productive. Thompson, Jackson, Brown, Bush, and Johnson + McMillan as the freshmen has to be the most talented group in the conference. Look at the offer lists of this group collectively, and it's impressive to say the least.

2019 when Jyaire Shorter dragged the Southern Miss defender like 10 yards into the endzone, I knew he was gonna be a baller. WR is going to be INSANE this year, from depth to talent to explosiveness to physicality.

In my 2021 Phil Steele College Football magazine (& I forgot to put this blurb in the other thread), but Steele said he believed North Texas would have the best tandem of receivers in CUSA.
Sports fans, if Phil Steele said it bag it up & take it the the bank.

••• I think the addition of 4 star Georgia Bulldog’s transfer Johnny Bush probably sealed the deal on that from the Phil Steele staff.

💰💰💰😳 Phil Steele’s magazine retails at $19.95.  If you’re a member of the Barnes & Noble book club I think SUMG said you got a 20% discount.

➡️ This: In 2021 Phil Steele kept an updated portal & transfer computerized list of every D-1 FBS school & did so up until the day his magazine went to print.
That is why the 2021 PS Summer College Football magazine is head & shoulders above the rest.  Some of that group of football magazines  got last year’s 2-deep & based much of their 2021 forecast off of (what is basically) not up-to-date information.
