Kid is smart. Has around 4 or 5 offers from Ivy League schools. I have read that Ivy League schools use some kind of financial incentives when recruiting athletes. They are not referred to as athlete scholarships. Can somebody here explain the intricacies on how these Ivy Schools pay for an athletes education?

To my understanding Ivy league schools do not offer traditional athletic scholarships.  Found this online:

the Ivy League as a group does not award merit, talent, or athletic scholarships to prospective students. Instead, Ivy League colleges offer some of the strongest need-based financial aid programs in the world.

So if you have a financial need they can assist you with books tuition and living expenses.

My understanding is that the same applies for the service academies either:

Strictly speaking, there are no athletic scholarships at the service academies. Every student at Army, Navy, and Air Force is on scholarship. Athletes get considerations in the nomination and admission process, but there is no financial aid earmarked for athletics.

So given that to enter one of the service academies requires an appointment from a member of congress and outstanding grades, extra curricular etc, you could say that an athlete might receive a commendation over a regular applicant with higher stats.   They do not offer athletic scholarships.
