2021 North Texas Football Way Too Early Schedule Predictions

Sept. 4 Northwestern State - UNT will win this one big at home 44-14

Sept. 11 at SMU - SMU is still too much although UNT gives a valiant effort 35-21

Sept. 18 UAB* - UAB is still the best team in the conference especially at home.  UAB wins 31-17

Sept. 25 at Louisiana Tech* - A very close game but Tech pulls ahead at home to win by a hair.  La Tech wins 28-23

Oct. 2 Bye

Oct. 9 at Missouri  - UNT makes this interesting but beating a crappy SEC team on the road is still a bit too much.  Missou 45 UNT 35

Oct. 16 Marshall* - I think UNT will win this game at home against a down Marshall program that is rebuilding.  UNT 45 Herd 31

Oct. 23 Liberty - I am sorry to say but Liberty has too much talent.  UNT will come up short against Hugh Freeze 31-17

Oct. 30 at Rice* - Rice is improving a lot but I see us winning this on the road in 2021.  UNT 28 Rice 21

Nov. 6 at Southern Miss* - USM is still tough especially on the road.  UNT loses 27-24

Nov. 13 UTEP* - UTEP is getting better but UNT still has their number especially at home.  UNT 41- UTEP 21

Nov. 20 at FIU* - Very tough game against Butch Davis on the road.  This one could go either way so I will give NT the edge in a defensive struggle 23-21.

Nov. 27 UTSA* - UTSA may be the darkhorse team this season and sadly may be better than us on this day.  UTSA 38-UNT 35

Final record prediction 5-7 but good news is we will get to a bowl game because there are not enough teams to fill the spots again this season.   Also this team is much improved from last year, the defense improves a lot and the 2022 season looks very bright.

We gave up 42.8 points/game last year. This has us giving up 28 points/game. If we improve our defense by 13 points/game, I fully expect us to add more than just one additional win from last season.

Ideally, that would mean way more stops, which would put the ball in our offense's hands more often to score more points.
I won't say point for point, but if the defense drops 14 ppg (an enormous turnaround), then I think it might be fair to hope the offense improves 7 ppg (up to 41 ppg)!   If our average is 41-28, we should be a 9-win+ team.

We don't have Darden anymore as a security blanket, but I think with Shorter back, and the prospect of Torrey shifting out into the slot & Addaway, I think the offense can be just as potent, if not moreso.

This puts a TON of pressure on Bennett to come through.    Fingers crossed.

This team has too many unknown variables. I use to think that a team with as many personnel turn overs as NT has had this off season it would take time for the team to come to gather. But SMU has proven that's not necessarily true.

It will be a interesting season.

I think the main unknowns are how the defense reacts to Bennett, does Ruder contribute and does the OL continue to grow.  On offense, we only lose a part-time starter at QB, one starting OL and our leading WR.  We may not have anyone step up and lead like Darden, but that could be a good thing in that they all step up and contribute and the opposing D doesn't have someone to focus on.  Our running game should be strong as well as our TE play.  I would love to see their catches increase this year.

We didn't lose much on defense, and I think we all pray that the talent is there, and that last year's results were an issue of a poor system being in place.  I am the eternal optimist, and believe that we will have a better year than many expect.

Losses - Missouri, Liberty, SMU

Wins - Northwestern, UTEP

The rest of the conference games could go either way. The way transfers are coming and going it's hard to gauge how good we can be, or how good the rest of the conference might be.

OOC - I think Liberty might be the toughest game. Freeze has a team and a QB that could help him get back to a high level P5 job and I think he will be pushing hard. SMU's success depends on their QB play. If one of their new players steps up and outright wins the job  they seem to have a lot of talent. Playing Missouri in between games with Tennessee and A & M could offer us a chance at being overlooked. Will be interesting to see how much they improve with a full offseason under Drinkwitz. If we don't beat Northwesters - let's don't go there. (1-3)

Conference - UTSA, Marshall, and UAB look to have good teams. I will never count out a Holtz coached team at La Tech. Rice, S-Miss, and FIU are teams that should not be better than us, but that does not mean we are much better than them. We should beat UTEP - Dimmel has this program in a mess. (4-4)

Looks like 5-7  is we play solid. If the D does not step up we could be 2-3 win team.

It will take a near record breaking 1 year turnaround on defense to have a winning record this year. And our offense was honestly not all that great when it mattered last year (we seem to get an awful lot of garbage TDs and yards)

This will have to be Littrell's best coaching job since he's been here. I haven't seen anything in his long tenure here that would tell me he can beat anyone but bottom feeders and we don't have enough bottom feeders on the schedule.

I will be really surprised if we're better than 2-5 going on the road @ Rice. I think we'll be 1-6. Even if we're 2-5 we have to go 3-2 down the stretch to even get to 5 wins. Littrell will have lost the team by then so I don't see 5 wins. Hope I'm wrong.

4-8 is possible (beat the FCS, UTEP, maybe FIU and split Marshall/USM?) but I would say 3-9 is likely. Maybe Littrell coaches like his job depends on it this year. (and it most certainly does)

6 wins for North Texas this Fall & then 2022 will become our dream season after this unique collection of talent all get 1 year of experience under its belt.  Obviously, like at other FBS programs who are anti their Coach there are some who want Littrell to fail—yet some of us want him to exceedingly succeed. No doubt—a strange group of fans we are.

I’m going with the Seth Littrell MG football program that went 9 & 2  in 2 of his earliest  seasons in Denton & I’m also going with the  24/7 recruiting gurus who think our last 4 classes of recruits have each graded toward the top of CUSA.   At most schools meeting such criteria usually culminates into the beginnings of a string of winning football seasons & I believe North Texas will join that “most schools” group in mere months.

Just a hunch, but I don't think Bennett's impact will be subtle.  We're going to find out really quick whether it's same-ol-same-ol, or there will be a 10+ ppg improvement.

I have no clue as to how many wins and losses we have, but I think we will be vastly improved.  I hate to think about being a much better team and still only winning 4 games, but I think it could happen.  I believe 6 or 7 wins would be a very successful season.
