Mens C-USA golf championship

Is starting today. You can follow the scores at http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=teamPlayer&tid=21973

It has so far been ok, but not NTs best season. Meanwhile for the conference as a whole there are an exceptional number of quality teams, so NT may at best be a dark horse, but definitely not the favorite.

Selected Golfstat rankings prior to the tournament:

Charlotte 33

UAB 38

UTSA 44

NT 73

FAU 79

MTSU 95

La Tech 104

all others > 125

For the NCAAs, there are 6 regionals with 13/14 teams each.

Given this years strength of the conference, maybe a second or third spot might raise the profile enough to give them a shot at an at large. I am not so sure however.

UAB doing so bad is surprising. They and Charlotte are the main favorites. Wouldn't be surprised if they start clawing back shots in rounds 2 and 3. NT playing very solid so far, fairly even as a team.

The important part is to stay in the top 4 by the end of round three. The champion is decided through match play among those top 4 (which is different from the women's tournament)

Back 9 was not great. NT currently tied for third at even par, 5 shots behind UTSA and 2 shots ahead of 5th spot. Some teams are still out there, so it is possible that they still fall a bit back.

Its an ok starting position for round two, but still a good deal of work to do to make the semi finals

MUTS shooting a FIRE ROUND at -13

Crazy, but three of their golfers are -15 on the day.  Based on their rankings coming in to the tournament, this is a surprise and I would be surprised if they can keep up that level of play through the week.

Absolutely crazy round by MUTS indeed, came kinda out of nowehere.

NT did ok. -2 for the day and tournament. Marzilio is leading them and second in individuals. Hole 18 was rough on NT though. Still NT is still 4th, 3 shots off the lead, but just one shot ahead of UAB in fifth.

A decent effort tomorrow, and they make the semis.

8 teams within 8 strokes of the lead is crazy and the MUTS played out of their mind, -12 for the day.

NT is a bit more than halfway through and currently third -3 for the day. Playing partner UAB is having a great day at -8 and tied for the lead with MTSU 4 shots ahead of NT.  UTSA and ODU ate 2 shots behind NT and Charlotte is also still in striking distance of a semi-final spot. Its seems like it might come down to the wire for those semifinal spots.

NT generally with a great back 9 there. Marzillio even cam from 4 shots down to take the lead in the individual with only one hole to go for him.

Semis final qualification looks highly probable now.

FAU also had an incredible round (-14), but because of their horrible day 1 they are still not getting close to making the playoffs.

Edit:

and there it is, NT with a -10 for the day, staying ahead of UAB. UTSA and charlotte still have about five holes to go, but unlikely that they can make up 11/12 shots.

And Marzillio likely just won the individual too. Great effort by everyone in the team. Good luck tomorrow in match play.

MUTS played lights out in rounds two and three.  Can they maintain that success in the match play?  I like where we are positioned heading in to tomorrow and Friday, and our team not having a lot of highs and lows throughout the tournament.

Does Marzilio take home medalist honors?

Either way, great final round by our men.  Excited to see how they do in match play.  It appears we will draw UAB tomorrow in what, if form holds, will be a tight match.

Munoz and Ortiz as the previous mean green C-USA champions is good company for Marzillio. Hope for him that he'll have a similar pro career.

They just started and UAB is currently 1 up in one pairing with two tied.
