Deadly Austin shooting highlights difficulties faced by family members of sexual assault, family violence offenders

Recommended Posts

On Monday, Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41, was arrested roughly 20 hours after the shooting that ended in three deaths, but it’s not his first time in custody.

Broderick, a former Travis County Sheriff’s Office detective, was arrested last June by Texas Rangers — accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old.

According to Stephen and Amanda’s divorce filings, Amanda requested sole custody of their two children (Alyssa and the couple’s nine-year-old son) due to Stephen having a “history or pattern of committing sexual abuse” on a person under age 18. Additionally, Amanda requested all visits with his kids should be supervised and that he not consume alcohol for at least 12 hours before.

How far back does his history go and did this stuff not come up when he was applying for the Sheriff's office?

Exactly.  So much wrong here and the result is the death of three innocent people.  Why was he no longer monitored?  Why was his bail reduced?  Why was he ever hired by the county?  The more that is learned about this person, the more senseless this all becomes.  I hope all that are responsible have to answer for their decisions.

Trying to avoid poking the bear too much, but something definitely needs to change. It's asinine that this even could have occurred.

So what are you implying? That the stress of being in law enforcement somewhat set this guy on a path of violence toward his spouse, and being a sexual predator of underage girls?

Not saying this is the case here, but the path may have already been laid and the stress from the job might have been the opening of the door.

Humans are complicated.

Or maybe, he was a douchebag that slipped through the cracks and was terminated once the cracks were seen.

Looks to me like he was allowed to resign rather than fired. And observers note that he likely had a lower bond because he was law enforcement.
