Crystal Ball - Looking down the road

Let's go with the assumption that Seth is not going anywhere until his contract is out, If he leaves early it's probably means we got ht and he was hired away. If he is still here after a couple of more seasons we have probably turned the corner.

So, to try and focus on something positive, what would you like to see in the next HC who comes after Seth?

  • Not so interested in getting the next "up and coming" star assistant looking to make a name for himself and move on
  • Would like a preven coach who has shown he can put a product on the field that can be competitive and solid in all three phases of the game. Could have had success at the G5 or FCS levels. Even a lower level P5 coach who has been successful, just not winning enough in a tougher conference. I'm not saying we need to get in a bidding war, but we have shown the willingness to pay a good salary. We should be able to compete salary wise against most other G5 scholls and damn near every FCS school.
  • Has shown the ability to make adjustment as needed based on players talents.
  • Has shown he can recruit players to a place that has not alway got the top players
  • Not so focused on one side of the ball that he neglects the other side

We need to take a long look at G5 and FCS programs that have shown sustainable success and see what they have done to make this happen. They do not necessarily have to be on a hot streak, but would rather see someone who has shown ongoing success and the ability to bounce back.

why not follow the model of Appalachian State, Arkansas State, etc...

Bring in a coach and he wins and moves on great then bring in the next coach who wants to come in to win not just collect paycheck, very rare for a G5 to maintain a winning coach for more then 4-5 yrs, now losing coaches, will hang around extra because the accountability is not there and any bowl game gives that glimmer of hope. 2 legit bowl games, forget that they were blow outs, with the highest paid HC should not cut it after 5 yrs.

SL is probably done after next year, but if not, the following season would be it. I would be death to recruiting you have your head coach go into a season with no guarantee of being there the following season. As we stupidly saw with Tony Benford, you aren’t going to see kids respond to your coaching either, as they know you’re a lame duck.
