This day in History Sept 3, 1988

A Corkey Nelson coached Mean Green quarterbacked by Scott Davis team defeated Spike Dykes and the Texas Tech Red Raiders with Billy Joe Tolliver at QB in Lubbock 29-24 September 3, 1988.   During this season, North Texas was ranked number 1 in the nation for several weeks in Division 1-AA

This win marked the beginning of the short lived tradition of throwing tortillas after scores at Fouts Field,  One Dallas based tortilla factory even began making green tortillas for the exclusive use of Mean Green fans at home games.  While the tradition was wildly successful, the NT administration shut it down as a danger to the fans attending games.

note:  Thanks for the correction.  I regret the error.  JH

Is this a tradition that Tech stole from UNT?

This implies that the game was played at Fouts.......it was not.  So if throwing tortillas grew out of this game experience, then we must have "borrowed it" from TT.

MOST NOTABLE about this game was that we were behind 0-21 a the half. We overcame the score and Billy Joe Tolliver and won in the second half. One interesting highlight was an interception by Rex Johnson......our all conference Nose Tackle.

I was at that game and we northeast corner of Jones Stadium by their students and every time they scored the student threw tortillas and some threw them toward us and the field so the NT fans started throwing them back after we scored. The NT fans started throwing them back after we scored and at end of the game  we deluged them with all tortillas we could find. Great game & memory 🦅🏈

Could someone elaborate to me about the dangers of tossing tortillas?

I mean, I'm not a fan of wasting food but, dangers?

They cause a mess that someone has to pick up perhaps. And, if folks start throwing those, might some asshat throw something more dangerous than a tortilla? Just better, knowing how folks just love to follow rules these days, to outlaw throwing anything onto the field.  Just guessing of course.

If I was a student in 1988 I'd volunteer to pick them up!

About the next point, I understand that. Someone always has to ruin it for everybody else.

The other concern was that objects thrown from the stands could lead to a penalty against the home team if those objects reached the playing field.  This was never a concern at Fouts, since we sat a 1/4 mile from the playing surface.  At Apogee, we could hit midfield!

i nailed a player from the stands with a tortilla once... that thing sailed a good 25 yards.
