What losing football would mean for college towns

Local officials and business leaders in some of Texas' college towns are bracing themselves for the possible cancellation of football — a move that could further injure local economies that are still limping from pandemic-related closures and are reliant on game day tourism.

On Tuesday, two of the Power 5 conference — the PAC 12 and the Big 10 — postponed their college football season to spring 2021, citing health and safety concerns from the coronavirus. Decisions from the three other conferences, including the Big 12 and SEC, are expected to follow soon. Coaches and student athletes in the Big 12 and SEC have indicated they want to move forward with the season as scheduled, despite early outbreaks across the nation — including at the University of Texas at Austin — that have already infected players with COVID-19.

Texas’ five major conference football teams – Baylor University, Texas Christian University, Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University and the University of Texas at Austin — are massive economic drivers for their cities of Waco, Fort Worth, College Station, Lubbock and Austin, respectively, generating a flood of seasonal business for hotels, restaurants and bars in a typical year.

It makes no sense why we canceled the Army series, and now Army has an open date since Rice isn't playing until the 26th!!

Littrell explained it really well at the coaches caravan. Scheduling Army does nothing for recruiting, you have to totally overhaul your defense for a week (messing up preparations for the coming weeks), and you really need to to be concerned about injuries because of the way they play. He said outside of Army being well known and respected it has way to many down sides. I tend to agree with him. They are small and hit dangerously low. A bowl game is a totally different story. Maybe this year is different because of the Rona...

What defense? We played better defense the years we played Army, I noticed that kick-ass defense last year, Oh wait. D-Line completely disappeared last year alone with O-Line on the 4th year of coaching and such a waste for Mason Fine.

Actually, we played almost the exact same amount of defense in 2016 (opponents scored 32.6ppg) as we did in 2019 (32.5ppg).

We played them 2017 also, 2016 was Littrell's first year?

So Littrell's first here year playing Army was just a fraction worse then his 4th year without army,? Not seeing a reason not to play Army. I am seeing a reason a coach should worry about better recruiting possibly. Hummmm.

Saying our players get hurt by playing Army is more an indictment on the players we recruit than on the system Army plays. If we had big time players this would be an easy W against a nationally recognized team that has clout, but hey I guess we’re ducking them because it’s too hard 🤨😒
