I read somewhere few days ago where they were related. 
“Pancho & Lefty” was composed by Townes Van Zandt just outside the Denton city limits in August of 1972.  

Texas Monthly(?)  had a feature article on the writing of that song which SUMG made me aware of about a year ago.

Best country video ever IMHO.

Thompson linebacker Jax Van Zandt recently committed to North Texas. The 6-1, 200-pound senior was one of the defensive leaders on last year’s Class 7A state champion and had offers from UAB, Maryland, Air Force, Army, Eastern Kentucky, Arkansas State and more.
