It's a shame some jerks not even associated with UNT protested and forces us to use NTSU.  If we could have switched to UNT in 1961 it could have saved us years of announcers mispronouncing our university's name.

My guess is that most of them (or all of them) were associated with UT. The SMU of state schools.

One of the biggest jerks was a guy in El Paso.

ISAACKS, MAUD (1885?–1980). Maud Isaacks, teacher and state legislator, daughter of Samuel Jackson and Minnie (Rutledge) Isaacks, was born near Austin, Texas. She moved to El Paso in 1916 and began a long teaching career in the public school system. She taught at El Paso Junior High from 1916 to 1921 and at El Paso Senior High from 1927 until 1954; from 1940 to 1954 she was chairman of the English Department. She was also a member of the state textbook committee. She earned a B.A. from the University of Texas in 1927 and an M.A. in 1940.

So that's the beef? Apparently a generation of folks think that putting "University of" in the front of the name should be reserved for one - maybe two - institutions in each state?

They could have gone privately to either of the sponsors of the bill and talked about their objections, and what they might do if the bill proceeded as written. But (in his best John Belushi voice) nooooooo, they had to get up and take to the floor and insult North Texas in the official record. Because they are UT graduates and therefore they could be as rude and dismissive as they wanted. 😠
