I remember him being here and people were upset that he was leaving to head back to KU.  I know he is not one of the flashy names that is on the market, but he is well respected and deserves a chance to implement his system and improve our defense before people start bad mouthing this hire.  KU isn't an easy place to be successful in football but he was on the staff when they did have a few moments of success under Mangino and Mason.  Welcome back to Denton Coach Bowen.

This is kind of what I remember of when he left. I thought people were bummed.

He took WKU from worst to 1st in his one season. When he was DC under Willie Taggart.  Dan Mccarney may have not worked out here but he knew defense. I think it speaks volumes that Bowen was his first hire. I have seen the one knock on him is that he has been at Kansas virtually his whole career. He loved his alma mater can anyone blame him. If i was able to make 500 k and work for UNT that next 20 years I would do it.

Listen to yourself. SL could steal your girl and slap your mom and you'd be standing there defending his pimp slap technique with an as a matter of fact time.

Any word on bringing Mark Mangino into the fold? There's definitely chemistry between him, Littrell, and Bowen.

and we could go bowling 3 out of 4 years. have back to back top 5 recruiting classes and you would still be finding something to cry about. Who did you want him to hire? What would have satisfied you as a hiring?

For a few on here no matter who was hired they would complain.

First off lets looks at the top 5 defenses this last season in conference USA and their current DCS

  1. UAB  - David Reeves Previous Jobs UAB DL JSU DL - https://uabsports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/david-reeves/1327
  2. WKU -Clayton White Previous Jobs NC State & Connecticut Special Team Coach - https://wkusports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/clayton-white/493

  5. Louisiana Tech - Bob Diaco Previous Jobs Defensive analyst Oklahoma Nebraska DC Connecticut HC - https://latechsports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/bob-diaco/496

Here is list of guy I like that are currently unemployed. I know before you scoff at the idea of bringing in guys that might have struggled in the Big 12. Lets remember there are not many "successful" Defenses in the Big 12. Also at North Texas we won't be going up against-the likes of  Lincoln Riley, Tom Herman, Matt Rhule, Mike Leach and Art Briles week end and week out.

  1. MIke Stoops - Former OU DC and Arizona Head Coach- He is currently at Alabama as a Defensive Analyst - https://247sports.com/Coach/Mike-Stoops-157/
  2. Ryan Walters- Mizzou Dc and former North Texas CB coach- Currently employed with HC getting fired- https://mutigers.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/ryan-walters/1359
  3. David Gibbs - Mizzou Safeties Coach And Former Houston and Texas Tech DC - https://mutigers.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/david-gibbs/1380
  4. Todd Orlando (MY PICK) - Former Texas and Houston DC - https://247sports.com/Coach/Todd-Orlando-539/
  5. Gene Chizik - Former NC DC and Auburn HC - https://247sports.com/Coach/Gene-Chizik-15/
  6. Jeff Koonz - Former North Texas and Ole Miss LB Coach - https://olemisssports.com/news/2019/3/7/football-names-jeff-koonz-linebackers-coach.aspx
  7. Barry Odom (My very Close second pick) - Former Memphis DC and Mizzou HC - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Odom

At Least I have been consistent.

He was also defensive coordinator from 2006 to 2008 where KU peaked at 12-1 and won the Orange Bowl, followed by finishing 8-5 the next year and winning the Insight Bowl. He's been around the block on defense (having coached nearly every defensive position) and he and Seth know each other really well. He's not all bad

Bill Young was KU’s DC in that Orange Bowl year. Bowen is not good at coaching up talent. KU was terrible under his lead on defense. And he wasn’t great here, either.

With the increase in salary I give this hire an F- . Proven bad defenses for several years. He's not even an unknown. We can see it, he's not been a good coach.  The program took a step back today. He's  coached 27 NFL players like that's impressive? He's been a  coach for a P5 for like 25 years.  30 points a game given up last time he was here. Do we think we have more talent than he had at KU?

I saw that on Wikipedia. I guess, looking there (which, admittedly isn't the best place to do research) and a few other places, it's hard to judge at which times he was DC (and DC only). To me, his career path indicates the general inadvisability of loyalty by assistant coaches towards one school. My favorite thing about him, as of these latest readings, is the Kansas JUCO connection.

I would be interested in who he recruited at North Texas. I understand the love for Skladany, but some of his best players were here before he came (and he was never noted for being a recruiter, in fact was considered not to be one by some).

Also, I was reading that his base defense was 4-2-5, and that was considered part of the reason for the Kansas defensive struggles when Les Miles took over and brought in a 3-3-5 guy. All I can say is, give the guy a chance. The worst fault I see is loyalty to his Alma Mater, a love which may have never been returned..

I'm not overjoyed by this hire. In Bowen's one season at UNT his defense allowed 30 points a game. And, he wasn't successful as Kansas' DC either, and was demoted after the 2018 season. I guess we just have to hope he has improved. Hopefully Littrell does better hiring an OC, because right now I'm not buying our defense being any better next season.

Grade for the hire: C-

Not a proven bad DC. That would have satisfied me.

An unknown would've been better than a retread who has a proven track record of being pedestrian at best.
