I’m honestly curious about why you guys are interested in Orlando? His defense at Texas, with those resources and talent, was statistically worse than UNT’s this year.

This. I'm (as always) hoping for someone on the way up who had to put together a gritty defense with little or no resources. Kind of like Corkey Nelson did here.

It's Texas, they have an epidemic of affluenza. His resume at G5 programs is excellent!

Absolutely this.

Dudes who go to UT have been “the man” everywhere they’ve ever been, with everyone around them saying, “we haven’t seen a player like you since <xyz HOF’er>“ ever since they played peewee ball.

Then, when they line up against other dudes who have also been “the man”, and they’re harder to go around or tackle than a generic 5A/6A kid, they fold.

Happens every year, and they’re lucky to have had VY grace their presence with his superpowers.

First off lets looks at the top 5 defenses this last season in conference USA and their current DCS

  1. UAB  - David Reeves Previous Jobs UAB DL JSU DL - https://uabsports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/david-reeves/1327
  2. WKU -Clayton White Previous Jobs NC State & Connecticut Special Team Coach - https://wkusports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/clayton-white/493
  3. Marshall -Brad Lambert Charlotte Head Coach - https://herdzone.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/brad-lambert/434
  4. FAU - Glenn Spencer Previous Jobs Charlotte and OSU DC - https://fausports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/glenn-spencer/480
  5. Louisiana Tech - Bob Diaco Previous Jobs Defensive analyst Oklahoma Nebraska DC Connecticut HC - https://latechsports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/bob-diaco/496

Here is list of guy I like that are currently unemployed. I know before you scoff at the idea of bringing in guys that might have struggled in the Big 12. Lets remember there are not many "successful" Defenses in the Big 12. Also at North Texas we won't be going up against-the likes of  Lincoln Riley, Tom Herman, Matt Rhule, Mike Leach and Art Briles week end and week out.

  1. MIke Stoops - Former OU DC and Arizona Head Coach- He is currently at Alabama as a Defensive Analyst - https://247sports.com/Coach/Mike-Stoops-157/
  2. Ryan Walters- Mizzou Dc and former North Texas CB coach- Currently employed with HC getting fired- https://mutigers.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/ryan-walters/1359
  3. David Gibbs - Mizzou Safeties Coach And Former Houston and Texas Tech DC - https://mutigers.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/david-gibbs/1380
  4. Todd Orlando (MY PICK) - Former Texas and Houston DC - https://247sports.com/Coach/Todd-Orlando-539/
  5. Gene Chizik - Former NC DC and Auburn HC - https://247sports.com/Coach/Gene-Chizik-15/
  6. Jeff Koonz - Former North Texas and Ole Miss LB Coach - https://olemisssports.com/news/2019/3/7/football-names-jeff-koonz-linebackers-coach.aspx
  7. Barry Odom (My very Close second pick) - Former Memphis DC and Mizzou HC - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Odom

Is everyone gonna floss over the fact that Art Briles doesn’t coach in the Big 12 anymore?? Jc

im only disappointed because of the number of ball busters on this board.

Great lost, though. Lol

Yeah.  I've watched most of the Texas games this year.  That defense was hot garbage despite being far more athletic than most teams they played.   They gave up 48 points to Kansas, y'all (for comparison Baylor gave up 6).   We don't want any part of that.

Clearly the better part of the argument with Todd Orlando, is the guy can recruit Texas. He would not be out of his own element and business as usual if he came to North Texas. That's my vote.

By recruiting garbage cans on the side of the road? Todd Orlando is a dumpster fire of a hire.

I think Todd Orlando would be a great hire, but I just don't see it.  He had a bad year no doubt, but he will likely be on several P5 schools radars as a good coach they can get for cheaper than usual after this past year.

Agree. He did not get where he is by being a "bad" coach or forget how to coach. I find it funny how people will talk about how bad a coach is when these guys would not have climbed the ladder if the could not coach.

Let’s put this in perspective: With Gibbs, Odom, Stoops, and others we are talking about seasoned candidates who have coordinated at the P5 level for years, including the College Football Playoff. We all have every right as fans to be disappointed in the 2019 results, and I can assure you no one is more disappointed than our leaders in Wren Baker and Seth Littrell. However, the good news is that we have raised the bar, financially and otherwise to where our AD, head coach, and key donors are willing to step up to the plate to bring in a coordinator or this caliber for a price that is possibly greater than what the previous head coach (McCarney) was making just a few years ago.

If we slow down and put that in perspective, common sense would say we should be encouraged as fans and excited about upgrading the caliber of defensive coordinator at UNT. This is an exciting opportunity to take a major step forward with our program!
