Florida Govenor Backs Student Athlete Likeness Bills

This is going to be the next big hurdle to change the landscape of college sports—much like the 1984 TV rights lawsuit that changed the entire landscape of college football.

There is just no way that you get the horse back in the barn from all of this. Just gotta let it run away and see what happens.

But their employers deduct taxes for them, and pay the employers portion as well.  Think that's gonna happen here?  Most likely Nike gives someone a $1,500 check and kid either reports it or not in April.

Companies have to report any payment over 600 to the IRS.

You think the IRS is gonna mess with $1500? That’s not even material to them. Go up to $5k or more to even begin to think about this.

Meanwhile, look for Oregon and Maryland to jump up big time with buying recruits with Nike and Under Armor money.

This is absolute asinine. Not because of the money. It's never been about the money to me. Let them make money, independently via true 3rd parties. But you KNOW that's not going to be the reality. It will be just another way for the filthy rich schools to funnel money to recruits, but by doing it semi-legally now. It's absolutely crazy. I think it's time for the NCAA to FORCE the big money programs out of collegiate athletics and allow the 100 programs or so left over to play actual college football.

If that happens, that's on them.   I was a freelance programmer during my college years, and I always filed my taxes correctly.

If compensation for your likeness becomes approved I am sure every institution will take time to train student athletes on their responsibilities.

Just be ready for Alabama's 5* backup Left Guard's (let's be real, very few people want an OL's autograph) "Likeness" to somehow be worth more than a guy like Doak Walker Finalist AJ Dillon from BC.

More importantly for those of you who are happy to see this happening... just be ready for SMU's 3* backup Left Guard's "Likeness" to somehow be worth more than a guy like Mason Fine or anyone else NT can bring on campus, really.

Absolutely true...the best thing that could happen for all of us is to have the Power Schools go be minor leagues officially for the NFL and NBA and let the rest of us play actual, real college athletics and give us all a chance for the national championship. Right now, I’m football, we have zero chance at the G5 level, and at hoops, it’s probably no better than 5% when the committee stacks the deck against anyone not in the Power Conferences (includes The Big East and Gonzaga).

Also, the IRS argument is weak. I was an independent contractor all through college and figured out how to make my tax payments. It’s really not that complicated at the end of the day. That argument is just an excuse. You can make arguments about the merits of athletes getting paid, potential risk of schools gaming the system, etc., but the IRS tax one is not an argument. It’s an excuse.

If you think about this....

Any business owner that's a donor should be preparing their budgets to start advertising for college players' likeness.

If I'm a car dealership in Austin, or a restaurant in College Station or a grocery store in Athens, GA...why am I not setting aside lots of $$ per year to pay out.

The #1 recruit in the country will be able to shop his "likeness" now right? You get a Vince Young type recruit....they can get $100K before ever stepping foot on campus.

It's not like we don't have big money donors too....

There's a big building on 635 with one their names on it....lots of opportunity to put the 4* QB's picture on there as well....

go crazy lets get nuts GIF

We don’t have anywhere near what our other non-SBCUSA schools (except Rice) have. Look at our endowment. It pales big time versus these other schools. And it’s a reality that football very recently even got some love from the BOR and administration. We literally killed two decades of fans with the i-aa debacle, past alumni and future alumni that just left in the 80s, 90s, and 00’s from us almost giving up. That’s why there are so many P5 t-shirt fans that went to UNT.

Our future chance of building a successful FBS program is very much contingent and this crap NOT becoming law.

You guys are acting like most kids aren't already passing up an offer from North Texas to be the Alabama's 4th string left guard.

That's because Alabama's 4th string LG is a 5* dude with offers from everywhere else too.

But that 3* OL who has offers from NT, SMU, Houston, etc.... Where we used to be able to compete & sometimes win that guy, he'll likely be off the shelf now, because in order to land him, the coaches & Wren will have to get our boosters to enter into bidding wars with these schools' boosters via the businesses they control paying for "likeness"...  And as much money as GBR and some of our other boosters have, we don't really have enough of the smaller/mid-level guys in our stable to match SMU & Houston.

And this is exactly why I’m afraid we will be left behind when conferences start shaking up again. We are just so far behind when it comes to the mid-tier donors I just don’t see how we catch up.
