What does the program need to move to the next level?

The program has made huge strides in being a better program. I compare us against our conference mates.

How does our HFC salary compare? How does our assistant salary pool compare? How do our facilities compare? How does our nutrition compare? How does our strength and conditioning compare? How does our recruiting budget compare? How does our recruiting personnel compare? The answer to most of those is best in conference.

We need to take the next step in recruiting budget and head count. We are close to being best of class in ALL of the previous mentioned areas except for recruiting budget but it’s getting better.

We are close to having no excuses. When you have that you have higher expectations (which we are seeing now). I know many don’t want to hear this but we need some more time to catch up. We need two more years

We are trending upward as a program. We are setting ourselves up to be the next Boise, UCF, or Houston of CUSA. That doesn’t happen over night after 100 years of neglect. Any success we’ve had in the past was smoke and mirrors. Now we finally have a foundation.

Well that's misinterpretation if I've seen one. You 100% fire the man if he doesn't deliver

So your suggestion is we just keep paying the man for mediocrity? I'm not sure what the end game of your argument is, but it seems like we should just accept the inevitable and hope for the best, but not make plans for it? We call that Mccarney Ball around these parts. It's not a big hit.

After two nine win seasons we are 2-4. If he goes six and six this year, you would fire him?

How has no one posted the obvious answer; money.  Lots and lots of money.

Money to secure coaches and assistant coaches.  Money to keep “pay day” games off the schedule.  Money for amenities to keep the students’ interest.  Money for promotions and marketing.

If money was that important.  NT would rule the conference.

Where is this additional money going to come from, I think NT is at the limit of charging athletic fees to the student?

You don't want guarantee games.

The reason that NT doesn't spend more on promotions and marketing is that it is not cost effective.  Wins drives attendance, everything else is a distant seconds.

I know this isn't directed at me, but I have 2 answers to that question. First, we're not going 6-6 I'm afraid. And we don't fire him this year regardless of the outcome and we shouldn't.

But given what is being squandered this year and what was squandered last year in terms of talent...The seat warmer needs to be turned on. We have went from beating Southern Miss and SMU by 3-4 touchdowns and in 1 year losing to both by 3-4 touchdowns. You can spare me all the recruiting BS comments. Those kind of turnarounds are coaching blunders by our evidently by the second overpaid coaches.

Six games in and I just don’t see the overall talent on this team, especially on the defensive side. I’d have a hard time putting anybody on this D on some of the defenses ive seen at NT. And I’m talking SunBelt defenses

If you want to blame the lack of talent on the head coach, I’m cool with that. But to me, you help him get better talent in, not automatically decide he’s a mediocre coach. Especially after the shitshow coaches we had prior to him.

I say give him the opportunity to fix the problems.

What specifically does Coach Littrell need to produce a better product?

Better talent! Which we are now finally getting.Look at the ratings of the 16-17 classes! Mason has been the smoke and mirrors of the recruiting classes with his outstanding play and leadership!

What problems?

Coach and Wren have gone full radio silence since Saturday night regarding the flagship football program with the exception of a retweet encouraging student attendance. (Lets all get a good laugh in on what that number will be on Saturday).  It does appear Wren is hyping Basketball and a few of the womens' sports.  So since no one is talking about it officially, there clearly is NOT a problem.  Chant the normal thing people say with me: Remember Portland State, Remember Portland State, Remember Portland Sta... 😴

In a last ditch effort to have zero communication with fans before Saturday's game, I'll assume there will be a tragic fire at Rudy's tomorrow to avoid the weekly Seth Littrell Show... not that you can even easily listen to it anymore unless you set your cassette deck to record it (anyone have one I can borrow?).  The NEW HOME for the Seth Littrell Show seems to think Podcasts are just some passing fad that KNTU wasted their time with the past few years.

If I'm Wren, I am constantly updating a wish-list of potential hires, currently available and possibly available, in case the decision needs to be made.  Whether SL is on a hot or cold seat.

Seth is not getting fired after this year.  And he shouldn't be.  But if he goes 6-6 (*EDIT: not even that bad.  We are paying him a ton*) for a couple years then you definitely have to have a meeting and look at all the variables.  Are we failing in recruiting? Did a handful of playmakers jump ship? Is there something in place that gives us a sense of assurance that things will rebound?

SMU's last two games with TCU revealed a 30+ point swing.  SMU figured something out that SL did not see.  Neither did Gary Patterson or a handful of other coaches.  Holding that game against SL is not a leap I'm prepared to make (yet).

I happen to think that the level of recruit explains a lot.  You live in some mindset that thinks you can call BS on something you don't like to hear and that magically makes it illogical.  I am not sure what else to tell you.

I am assuming that you are an Alumni and fan. And if so, then we can start by having our alumni/fans always use "we", "us", and "ours" whilst making reference to OUR program. Most fans of other programs almost always use ownership words/phrases when referring to their school and it's programs.

The next thing I would suggest is that we look at how these guys run their program.

Since joining CUSA these guys have only had one losing season, they have only lost to us twice, they have played in two championship games, and they have won every bowl game that they have attended.

They have pretty good facilities but not nearly as nice as ours. They are located in a pretty rural setting and the town is a very nice small college town. The closest big time entertainment is Shreveport.  So, how do they consistently out recruit us?

Do they pay their coaches more than we do?  Or do they just do a better job of hiring coaches?

What the program needs to move forward is to replace Troy Reffett. That defense sucks. He was fortunate enough last year to have players that covered up for it's flaws. However, since he has been here we have had only one season of a decent defense. He needs to be able to put players in the right positions to fit their talents and abilities not forcing them to play his scheme when they cannot. No matter how good offenses get, defense still wins championships.

Exactly &.... IMHO...We must branch out & improve our East Texas & Louisiana recruiting.

We can pay more for any of ULM, ULL or La Techs best coach/recruiter combo.  HIRE JUST “ONE” FOR STARTERS!
La Tech has been kicking our ass in recruiting for years.  I call them “the Little Red & Blue Engine Who Could” & they are “could’ing” us out of good Texas-based recruits regularly.

A dose of reality and patience to let the recruiting classes of '19 and '20 mature.  Talk about taking over a dumpster fire in regards to recruiting!  Recruiting TX high school football talent is all about relationships and we had none because McCarney didn't cultivate any, plus our facilities forever were a joke.  SL had to build these relationships and the administration has had to prove we were serious about elevating our program which they both have done.  Sadly, North Texas was the place kids went when they didn't get offers from any other D1 program.  Now they are picking us for our program, the facilities and our university.

There's no commitment here to recruit size on the lines of scrimmage.

The D line rotation is too small. The LBs are too small. The O line is average on their good days.

The team who wins CUSA will have the best line play.

BINGO!

They have a history of success.  We have a history of mediocrity that is being eliminated at this time.

We need a head coach that practices what he preaches. He wants recruits to make a commitment. He tells his players to make the commitment. He expects the fans to make a commitment. He expects the University to make a commitment. Well then he needs to make an honest, sincere commitment as well. He tells his players to just do their job and we will win the game. Well, we need a head coach that just does his job.  We need a head coach that’s not looking for the next best P5 job or a bigger paycheck all the while telling his players we are family or this is home. We need a head coach that truly believes in his heart the “monster” this program can be, not a head coach that just throws out fancy, catchy words or rhetoric. We need a head coach that is more focused on winning Conference Titles, Bowl games and winning games against bitter rivalries and elevating the presence of the “program” than his own personnel agenda. We need a head coach that is determined to force expansion of Apogee before he entertains the idea of ever leaving. But most of all we need a head coach that recognizes the Blessing that has been bestowed upon him right here in Denton.  That’s what we need to get to the next level.

Honest question.   Does UNT have this coach now?
If not, we need to identify this coach immediately and hire him.  Sounds like maybe Nick Saban can fill this void.

Name me five D1 coaches or one in the G5 that can't be lured away by other schools.

I think it is naive at best to believe any HC is not going to always looking for more.  More money, better conference, better facilities

Do you not think that Littrell is doing everything he can to win?  It makes no sense for him to do anything else, whether his goal is to stay in Denton or leave the first chance he gets.

I'll agree with this statement when I see us win games that really mean something.........on a consistent basis.

Here is the record so far. We have yet to win a bowl game under SL. We have yet to win any regular games of great importance on a regular basis. 2017  (9-5 record) was the best example. We got curb stomped twice by FAU. And then for good measure, we got brutalized by Troy in the NO bowl. SL started off barely losing to Army in his first bowl here, and the subsequent bowl results are getting worse.

I simply answered the question by explaining what it would take to get to the next level. Whether that is Littrell or some other head coach is not my concern.

Whether we ever find that special individual is yet to be seen. But, for what it’s worth that’s what it will take.
