California bill that would allow athletes to make money off their own name, image and likeness

yeah... unless the NCAA is on board, this is kind of moot point...

this is like saying weed is legal in California, so all professional athletes that play in those states won't get tested for it.

Not true. Back in the day the NCAA handled all the TV contracts until a few schools sued, won and the NCAA no longer controls conference TV contracts.

To me this is all about momentum. If it only happens in CA then I could see the California schools backing down to the NCAA. But if another P5 conference gets on board, the NCAA will get steamrolled.

I can't wait for other states to jump on board. Perhaps this is the beginning of overhauling the NCAA. We can only hope.

This would be a DISASTER for North Texas if it gains a lot of traction.

In case you haven't noticed, we don't have a lot of boosters looking to pay for MGSF membership... let alone paying players for their "name/image/likeness".

Meanwhile, all of SMU's dreams would come true in relatively short time.    All it would take is some SMU alum business owner to say, "I'm going to put a commercial out for my business and use SMU football players as spokesmen, and pay them $100k each to do it."  Wonder how many 4* & 5* dudes they'd start pulling in?
Think Tillman Fertitta has some businesses & money he'd like to do the same with?

I guess we have a guy who can pay some players to promote his aloe vera products, or a guy with a tax firm to promote, but those wells have already been dipped into pretty heavily.

Assuming this is true, it doesn't matter. What you just described is called capitalism. It is already in place in college football, but right now it's benefiting everyone but the players. Like everyone else, they want the right to sell their services (playing football, their likeness, etc.) for money. In many schools, the value of that service has far exceeded the cost of attending a college for 4 years and the value of a bachelor degree, especially considering most of these young men get non-specialized degrees like Kinesiology. College football is not and has not been amateur for a long time. The system is already not working for North Texas, because unlike pro sports, college football doesn't even pretend to care about parity or the financial stability of their programs. The disparity in talent levels and college football still pretending to be amateur (when it's anything but) is starting to drive me away.

Oregon would soon have a team full of players getting paid by Nike. Can you imagine how much recruiting will take place? If you think the transfer portal is a mess now just wait. When P5 players have a good year, or are deemed marketable (example someone like Mason) they will get "offers" that might be too good to turn down. This could get out of hand quickly.

May as well cast NT back down to 1-AA (or at least Sunbelt-like, also-ran level) then.   We're on the cusp of doing something great with very few monetary resource streams.

We're able to somewhat compete against Houston for players now.
If this happened to win over support in Texas, we soon won't be able to when a bunch of Joes Crab Shack commercials with 5-10 young men sitting at a table ordering the whole menu because they're so hungry... Oh, they just happened to also be 4 & 5* recruits out of Houston & San Antonio/Austin-area high schools that probably would have otherwise gone to Texas, A&M, OU, Alabama, LSU, etc..., but Fertitta cut them each a check for $200k in order to use them in his commercial... because he can.   Then, the next season, a fresh batch of 5-10 4 & 5* recruits get their own commercial for one of the other chains under the Landry's umbrella...  See how that could quickly get away from North Texas?

Yeah, this would be death of college football.

I actually don't have a problem with players getting paid. I just think in the realm of college athletics it needs to happen equitably.

I know it sounds terribly socialist, but I'd be fine with a system where the money funnels up from the schools and conferences and gets revenue-shared by the NCAA and re-distributed back to the players. #1 QB at Ohio State makes the same as the 75th man on Miami (OH). One's not necessarily working harder or doing more at their job than the other.  It's the only way it doesn't remove all competition from college athletics.

There are too many contradictions and unsolvable problems in college football to paper over. While nominally on the same level, half of the conferences are flush with cash, and the others aren't. All this revenue is generated on the backs of "student athletes" who are unfairly restricted from using their own likeness as they please.

The P5s and the NCAA want to maintain the status quo as it reinforces their supremacy. If it were really about the love of the game and amateurism, level out the conferences and share revenue evenly. We can't even get a real playoff, so I'm not holding my breath.

Unionized workforce and revenue sharing? Damn, that's NFL level socialism right there.
