How casual are we talking?  Are we talking about people who never watch basketball at all unless it's UNT, because even if they only turn in for March Madness they would have heard of them.  MTSU won as a 15 seed in the 2016 tourney (over a trendy pre-tournament favorite in Michigan State!), following it up the next year with another 1st Round upset.

You give people too much credit my friend, most people don’t have a clue that even happened. Hardcore fans show up. To fill the super pit you have to play a brand name or play a game that matters. The CBI Championship is evidence of the latter.

Florida Gulf Coast made its name with one tournament run.  A lot of people nowhere near that school still remember who they are.  Why them and not MTSU?
