Bowl Game

I just struggle to see them ever put UNT in Frisco.  I mean we need 35,000 seats for a local bowl and if we played Houston then you would need another 5 - 10,000 seats. Now move that to the cotton bowl and now we are talking.  The drama of such a matchup would be delicious with all the local talent, coaching ties to Texas and Oklahoma college football.  This would be a tough game but would provide a huge opportunity to match the strength that is Houston football.

North Texas vs Houston in Cotton Bowl Stadium would sell a lot of tickets.

I think if we can win out & LATech drops 2, and we finish 2nd in the division, the ServePro Bowl might be in the cards.

If LATech finishes above us, and a B1G team actually shows up in Dallas, they're going to take it.  If they get friggin Toledo or Coastal Carolina, they'll pass & we may still wind up there.

It's not as simple as La Tech getting to pick their bowl. ESPN and CUSA have a lot of influence on what teams go to which bowls. They want butts in seats and with the attendance problems the ServePro (HoD) Bowl has had in years we weren't there, look for us to be pushed that way. I'd be really surprised if La Tech didn't go to NOLA.

Unless LaTech comes back to win the West I think we most likely end up bowling in Dallas.  The bowl is going to want us, it's a good opportunity for us to sell the program to the fans who will come out and see a big green crowd.

However if we did get the New Mexico bowl, Santa Fe is a nice area about an hour outside ABQ.  Stay there instead.

We have 4 games left:

Rice at home--sure win

@ ODU-- probable win (their win over Va Tech might be the biggest upset of the last decade)

FAU--toss up--I still don't think we can match up with their overall talent, even though it has been underachieving...but at home on a Thursday nigh, we will see if we can get some revenge

@ UTSA--toss up--its their Super Bowl, we may not act like we give a damn in this one.

If we go 4-0 or 3-1, we will got to the Servpro Bowl game in Dallas. I see La Tech in the Independence Bowl, and UAB in the NO Bowl. If we got 2-2 or worse, I suspect we end up in the NM Bowl, although that is very possible even if we finish better than 2-2. We are the closest CUSA team to their city and SDSU would be a good bowl matchup.

There are a lot of things that go into how bowl games shake out.
UAB going to NOLA unless they collapse, or FIU/MT happens to beat them in the championship game, which I highly doubt.
ServePro Bowl wants dollars from travelling fans.   LATech has shown that they will travel to the Metroplex for a Bowl game, so I bet if they finish ahead of us, they'd get that invite.

I can see LaTech playing Louisiana Monroe in the NOLA bowl.

No.  That is what the NO Bowl wants, since it was formed by the GNOSF to get people into hotel rooms and spending money in casinos and on Bourbon.

ServePro is owned by ESPN for TV ratings.  LaTech isn't going to get any more viewers that NT is.  That's just the fact of G5 life.  If you have two schools that will bring in about the same what makes better TV?  A big crowd.

Here is the bowl attendance numbers:

  1. OkieSt vs Purdue 48,313
  2. Houston vs Penn St 46,817
  3. Texas Tech vs Northwestern 40,121
  4. North Texas vs Army 39,117
  5. North Texas vs  UNLV 38,380
  6. LaTech vs Illinois 31,297
  7. Utah vs WV 20,507
  8. Washington vs Southern Miss 20,229

USM and LaTech each got a P5 and we still had better attendance.  More or less by ourselves, especially against UNLV.

CUSA always does it's best to get the champion in whatever bowl they want.  After that it's working out who the bowls want.

We got shafted both times on opponents..yeah.. yeah.. we have no room to talk being a G5. But we could have easily been #2 on that list if we had Illinois or Washington as an opponent..  Instead of LaTech or S.Miss.

Cerebus, you're more educated on bowl stuff then me and a lot of other posters. But if I'm servpro, I want a 10-2 or 9-3 North Texas playing a P5 in Fair park. Guaranteed a best seller of tix.

If you've spent any time watching UTSA this year then you know they are a BAD team. Like only slightly better than UTEP and Rice bad. Our defense should be able to hold them to 17 or less and I don't think UTSA has the talent upfront to give our offense problems like LA Tech and UAB. If we show up ready to play then we win by 3 scores.

Depending on our bowl opponent, I think we have a really good chance at going 11-2. FAU is the only team left that might have the talent to slow our offense down.

We do have a say where we go. Travel to bowl games and bowls will fight for us. Don't travel to bowl games and your beloved ESPN will put us where they want.

We have shown that we can put butts in seats at serv pro in Dallas but that comes with no hotels and tourist spending.

We didn't blow the doors off of New Orleans last year with attendance.

Bowl games aren't rewards for having a good season. They are money makers for cities. We have a small track record of not being a big money maker so we made a choice of being put in whatever bowl ESPN decides.

I agree completely on UTSA, no doubt, but I know that they will look at the game against us that last weekend as their Super Bowl game, as they always do. I can just see us not matching their level of intensity, falling behind, having to scramble back to try and win on the road. But I do think we should win that game, all things being equal.

Huh?
The First Responder Bowl is put on by the City of Dallas.  They pay $300k to host this bowl game at the Cotton Bowl.   They definitely get a say.

ESPN owns the rights to broadcast the bowl, I suppose, but they don't "own" any bowl.

The city of Dallas would love to get two out of town schools who would spend tens of thousands of dollars on hotel rooms. That's probably what they were sold when the bowl was initially created as a Big 10 vs Big 12 match up.

But if you look at the history of the match ups, Dallas obviously has very little say in who plays in the game.

Not to mention, we have a history of playing poorly in San Antonio. As Ashton pointed out in the barbershop podcast, we have issues in Birmingham and San Antonio for some reason. I think we put UTSA to sleep, but UNT needs to be firing on all cylinders or we're in for a rude awakening.

They used to but I don’t believe they paid up this year. @Cerebus?

i think that was why it was HOD and now Servepro.

No they don't.  The bowl is owned and organized by ESPN Entertainment.  The city used to pay $400,000 a year for the bowl game to be held in the Cotton Bowl.   However, even then they didn't get to say how the bowl was being run, or who was invited.  That is the primary reason there was a huge dust up about the costs in the Dallas City Council meetings this year.  A faction decided the money would be better spent elsewhere.  They were able to cut the cities contribution significantly, from $400k to $150k a year, and the agreement only runs for two more years.

The funding cut was big enough that ESPN teams up with Impression Sports, which is a subsidiary of Fox Sports.  It's my understanding that Impression is who got ServePro on board, or otherwise this bowl might already be dead.

Here is an article last year about the bowl situation:

USA Today: How ESPN, College Football Playoff are saving bowl games

Quote

The Playoff had had a bigger impact than expected in terms of diminishing the other bowls,” said Gary Cavalli, the former executive director of the San Francisco Bowl Game Association, which founded the Foster Farms Bowl in 2002.

As a result, more lower-tier bowl games have been picked up on the cheap by for-profit companies such as ESPN Events – altering the complexion and business model of an industry that previously was exclusively run by local non-profit civic organizations that promoted tourism.

---

The other 13 “for-profit” games are owned by ESPN Events, a division of the cable sports network. That’s crept up considerably since 2005, when ESPN Events owned just three of the 28 bowl games.

I think ESPN Events now owns 15 bowls.  They are run by them to provide TV programs that they can sell ad space on.  The First Responders bowl is one of them.

No way a Mean Green team that has never won In San Antonio sleepwalks into the Alamo city.  There is much to prove and their fans are dislikable.  This has been a blacklist kind of season and winning in San Antonio is on the List.
